vin location on '54 f100

Hi
Very new to this. My husband and I are stripping what we believe is a 54 f100. The trouble is the vin plate in the door jam is damaged so we can't read it and the only number on the framerail does not resemble a Ford vin (it starts with A) Would the number be stamped anywere else in the engine bay? It is a right hand drive and I'm in Australia.
Cheers
Kathryne

This is a 56 frame, picture borrowed from Walfords56 gallery. Your 54 will look the same. I believe the numbers will be on the right side close to the shock mount. I have a 56 myself and the vin tag was mounted on the left front door post but believe the earlier effies had them in the glove box. There are better authorities on the subject than I but would like to welcome you to the forum. When you get a chance post some pictures of what you have.

I stole 56panelford's picture and drew a red box where the VIN is located, in the lower left corner.

Edit: To answer your original question, those are the only locations the VIN would be.

I believe the "A" means it is a "Ford Australia" truck that has a platform built in the USA.

My 54 has the vin plate in the glove box. Haven't noticed anything in the door.

As EffieTrucker posted and marked in pic the number is stamped on the right hand forward cross member on my 54 There is also a tag located on the glove box door.

If its an 54 it should read something like this...

F10D4B14****

F10 = F100
D = 223 V= 239 Z= 256
4= 1954
B= assembled in Buffalo
14*** production run number

Here is a good link that give all the various engine, assembly plant, paint codes...etc info

54 F100 | 1954 Ford | Truck | F100 | Information | Parts

On both of my 53 frames the vin is located on the frame rail, not the cross member. It is located right next to the 3 rivets that hold the front cross member to the frame rail. It is on the inboard side of the rivets.

Keep in mind, gentlemen, that we need to be careful throwing around too many "should"'s. Our original poster said she is in Australia, and if her truck is not of US production, our standard VIN location and number sequencing rules may not, and most probably do not, apply. Even Canadian production has it's own set of standards, so no doubt Australia does too, if it was built there. All we can provide is the things we know, and hope it's helpful.

Welcome to the forum, Kathryne!

Not to hijack the thread, but I find little differences like this interesting. Both of my 53 frames have them on the cross member. They are both "H" Highland Park, MI trucks.

If she is the one that posted the tearing down of their truck a week or two ago the pictures showed a CA plated truck which would make it produced state side and the numbers "should" be where the members have said.

Just re-read her post and it is not the same truck as the other truck was a left hand drive, maybe the number would be on the opposite side, e.g. the passenger side for them.

I'm with you 100%! I think it would be great if we could assemble a vin location thread with pictures and locations of exactly where frame numbers are found. One that would identify the year and assembly plant. I think it would be a great resource.

Red face

Hi guys,
We've checked both sides/framerails and all crossmembers because we figured things would be different being right hand drive. vin plate was found on our passenger side (your drivers side) but we can't read it due to damage. We are about to take it apart bit by bit (full restoration job - should be fun) so maybe it will turn up as we restore each piece. The only number we found was quite strange - AQA1529F - and does not match up with anything I have researched so far. Thanks for your input though and I'm sure this won't be the only question I'll be asking over the coming months/years.
Cheers

Hi Kathryne! Have you called Ford Australia to see if they have an idea? The number is "13FORD" (13 3673) for Ford Customer Relations. I've seen where the folks on the AFF have been getting production info from them.

Hi
We tried 13ford but they only went back to '62. We've given up on the VIN for now but we were wondering what was a good reference book for the complete tear down and restoration of a 53-56 f100. We have found a couple but they are now out of print and hard to come by. Any suggestions? We are down to bare chassis so she is looking pretty sad at the moment - plenty of work to be done!!
Cheers
Kathryne
