Different engine but we installed one on our farm truck (89 7.3L IDI). Sounds way faster/stronger than the previous aftermarket one we had on it and dad say's its never started that well before. Expensive but so far in the teen's to twenty degree weather, worth the price.

Thanks for the reply.
I guess you bought a new one.
Any clearance problems?

There is sometimes some
Trimming required on the crossmember under the motor! Very minor!

I'm running one in each of my 7.3's (F250 and Excursion). My first one in my truck didn't last but about 2 years, though... not sure why, but I'm not spending money on the shipping to find out why. I has decided to get my second one for the Excursion right before the first one died in my F250, and decided to go ahead and try one more in the F250, but if either of these current units die too early for my taste, I'll be switching back to OEM.

I did end up having to grind out a small arc for some extra clearance between the starter and engine cross member... roughly 1/4" was enough for me.

Did you buy a new one or a rebuilt.
Does it seem to spin the 7.3 faster then factory?

Who did you purchase yours from?

Thanks

All three of my purchases were brand new units from DB Electrical. Since there is an extra tooth on the starter gear, there is no doubt about it spinning noticeably faster than the stock starter.

Regardless, the $420+ price you found is WAY out of line with what you can find elsewhere for brand new units.

http://www.dbelectrical.com/p-5653-f...355-17802.aspx $95 + S&H

http://www.nationsautoelectric.com/Diesel.html $149 + S&H

DB Electrical - Ford 7.3 Diesel Starter Powerstroke Truck HT 1994-2003 SND0355 17802 $95 + S&H

Diesel Starters & Alternators 100% New Great Price $149 + S&H

Diesel Starters $150 + S&H

Is the Denso,100% bolt up?

Any shimming required?

Does the factory wiring to the starter bolt up without any modifaction to wires?

I've seen several postings about DB and there starters acting up.
They didn't seem to be specific on which starter they were talking about.

Thanks for the help

The Denso is 100% bolt up.

No shimming required.

The conector on the large hot supply wire needs to be flattened and the square tab broken off. The small gauge wire is very close in required length, so I go ahead and cut the ring terminal connector, add about 1 foot of additional wire, and then install a new ring terminal connector... this makes the installation much easier.

The starter people are talking about from DB is the same one I have bought and am currently using on two vehicles.

Thanks for all the help.
I contacted NATIONAL AUTO ELECTRIC
They have a factory new Denso not a copy for $325 delivered.
The $149 is a Denso copy.
They have a high torque 3 hole mitsubishi factory new not a copy for $220 delivered.
Based on your Denso and your factory starter does your 7.3 start right up with the Denso.Like a gas motor starts as soon as you hit the key. no cranking.
Mine starts after about 3 seconds.
No issues with starter just need to look ahead to help elminate being stranded.

Thanks again

On startup, my Excursion fires right up, typically within 1-2 seconds, especially when warm. When it's cold and on the first start, it might sometimes take 2-3 seconds. That particular starter seems to be spinning faster than the one on my F250 even though both starters are brand new.

The starts on my truck are very slightly longer than on the Excursion, and I am convinced at this point it is mainly because I have a brand new IPR valve in the Excursion and a "tired" IPR valve in the F250. (I have the brand new valve for the truck, but just haven't taken the time to install it yet).
