05 Transmission problems?

Can anyone tell me about the early trans problems with the superdutys at the beginning of the my 2005. I heard there were some problems with the early models but it was resolved soon. What should I look out for. Thanks

Look for a large hole in the side of the transmission. At the start of the '05 model year there was a change to a snap ring. It didn't work out and many of them came unseated and broke the transmission case.

As I remember it can come out either side. I don't know when they fixed the problem, but it was fairly early in the model year.

TRANS FAILURE

My 05 punched two holes in the top of the case when the reverse planetary snap ring let go. It failed without warning.
I think it happened when I was loading my camper. As some of you know; loading a camper takes several tries to get it on the truck straight. So pulling forward and backing up several times did it, I think.

I've heard that guys using snow plows have this failure also. reverse and forward several times with a plow will cause failure.

It took me awhile to figure out what was going on, because the transmission still worked fine, just had a pretty good leak coming from the top of the transmission. Matter of fact; I drove it to the steelership to have the trans replaced with a Ford Reman.

78K miles, not covered under warranty or recall.
