Tman, if you had distributor off and have somebody crank engine with your thumb over spark plug opening, you can see where the pointer is when compression is evident .....
To set the timing I put it 10 degrees BTDC on compression stroke and the rotor is pointing to number 1 on the cap which is pointing towards the rear of the engine correct?
Yes that sound right, can you verify your wiring against this diagram..
Ok got it to run (out of gas).But the only way it will start is the distributor turned all the clockwise,and the throttle wide open.But won't stay running on its own.
