some V-10 questions for a new-B / wannabe

Hey all,

I sold a 6.0 diesel and have read lots in that forum, but have not done much v-10 research. I find myself on the fence of purchasing one, and need to decide by tomorrow, so looking for a little guidance and basic questions...:

Regular gas (vs. mid-grade I mean)?

This one is low miles, 2003 model year with 61K, which is part of the attraction, it's probably not due for it, but is it good idea to do plugs now just to make sure all threads are okay, or just wait until 100k or issues arise?

The mileage question, i know it sucks basically, but wondering if a SCT tuner (or insert favorite brand here) helps noticeably?? on my 6.0L I ran only on economy mode, and did pickup up almost 2 mpg while also getting rid of a little turbo lag... Same rules apply to the V-10 or not??

I know that there was a running change to the V-10, to 3V per cylinder I think, what year did that occur? Is 2003 vs. another year better for this engine? If I need to look for a later year, would rather find out now than later...GP

Thanks for answere and other tips you may want to throw in...Geoff.

Lets see
I have an 03 myself. I run 87 with no problems with or with out the tuner.

If it were me and the truck runs OK, I'd wait on the plugs. When you do them be sure that you torque them to the correct spec. If you do you won't have any issues.

I get an avg of 13 mpg running the 87 performance tune. It seems to increase maybe 1-2 mpg in the economy mode. the best highway has 16.

97-99 V10 have 275hp and 405 lb. 01-04 V10 have 315hp and 425 lb 05-10 have 357hp and 462lb. The 3v motors had a better 5sp transmission but seem to get a lil less mpg.
Ive had a 7.3 and a 6.0. I really liked both(i had a good 6.0) the v10 does not have the grunt the PSD's do when the turbo comes on. But it pulls like a freak up top! I have a 30' 8K pound airbrick of a camper I pull and the V10 does it with no issues. I get 9-10 towing. For comparison sake the 6.0 PSD got 10 towing the same camper.

Not sure if you're looking at a pickup or Excursion, but the 3V never was on the Excursion.

I run regular in mine with no issues. I would change the plugs out while they are easier to get. Put some anti seize on the new ones before you install. I pull a 5ver at 9 to 10K with no problem. Mine is a 3 valve 2008. You will like it.

Interesting, so if this is true, the HP gain in 2005+ that VAXB is quoting does not apply to the Ex? Only the pickups? Did not know that.

Also, just noticed this one is 3.73 NON limited slip. I'm only towing a smallish boat for now, and had 3.73 in my previous, so not too worried about the ratio, but will I miss having limited slip? Not too sure what the real-world diff is if you have 4x4 when needed?

Thanks!

That's correct. 2005 Excursions only had the 2V V10 with the 4R100 transmission. The trucks had the 3V and TorqShift trans.
