I bought a 1949 F-1 last saturday. A 97HC------. When I tried to pull the truck from backyard to the front area the right rear tire failed to turn. After lube, the lug nuts were off. I removed the three bolts using a 1/2 socket. The backing plate keys that hold the shoes in place are gone. Can't feel anything through the adjustment hole. Emergency brake tension loosened. I can't get the drum off using a crow bar or hammer. Any thoughts? chuck
I imagine the shoes are rusted to the drum. beating on the drum with a big hammer and lots of heat. I have had to bust the drum with a sledge hammer to get them apart before.
Bigger hammer. Heat. Drums are cheap - same one used thru '67 on halftons. I've seen everything in there get all balled up. Likely the shoes rusted to the drum and the drums will need replaced anyway.
edit: I didn't even talk to artic about this..........
Another option if it is the simalar to the F2 is to unhook brake lines, unbolt wheel cylinder, remove nut that holds pivot and grind shoe pin heads off. It should make it easier. You will still need your trusty hammer. This may allow you enough room to pull adjuster off and get shoes off.
Paul, the pins are already gone. I couldn't feel anything through the adjuster hole using a long narrow screwdriver. I'll look at the other items. thanks, chuck
