Hi

I found a parent company to merchant's tire close to me it's NTB (national tire and battery). They are minutes from my job, I will check them out too.

Thanks a lot

are you saying that the AWD has issues between new and used of the same tire? or if they change size or brands?

Some AWD systems can be affected by the difference in a new set of tires mixed with worn tires of the same size. It may not be obvious, but will cause driveline failure.

Tires of different diameters rotate at different speeds, the sensors at each corner for the A4WD system sees this as slippage and tries to compensate. Used tires vs. new is clearly a problem.

The original poster has a 2WD model, so the different tire sizes are not an issue. That's why I ask him the 2WD vs. 4WD question.

Yes looks like I am good to go with 2 new ones only.

Thanks Alloro

Put it in A4WD and take it for a drive. If the front axle keeps getting powered then you have an issue. If everything works okay then you can relax.

I like the free balancing and rotation that came with my tires from Merchants. Check their parent company out careful. They may force you to purchase an alignment if they are offering a tire deal.

I have purchased dozens of sets online. I was able to save substantially because I had a friend with tire mounting and balancing capabilities in his shop that I could use. It is pretty close to a wash anymore though buying online vs at the local shop. My most recent set I bought online from discount tire because my local guy couldn't even get close on the price.

Shop around.

Replacing two tires on a 2wd truck is no big deal. It should be telling you something though. Regular rotations will keep all of the tires in similar shape and prolong the life of all of them. Buying 4 at a time can be expensive but having four matching tires is a huge boon to safety.

Thank you Big Greenie. I agree with you on this. Actually to me there are a dozen reasons why four are better than two, I just wasn't interested in outlining in detail after the response I got to my last comment. Tires tend to last me a long time so I choose not to cut corners here. I refuse to ride around on a substandard scenario like mismatched tires over say $300-$600. Especially when that cost for me is going to be spread over 5-6 years typically. BTW Big Greenie, how do you like the tires you have now? I am replacing soon on my Expedition and have been leaning toward BFG MT KM2's, but I like the way yours look too. I will be going 285/70R17 as well.

I LOVE these tires. Find another mud type tire with the winter rating. I do not think there are any other than the Dunlop. I have about 15 months and 30,000 miles on them now. I have been over the passes now with them half worn and the snow and ice traction is still very good. On the trails in the summer I air them down to 20 psi and tackle the rocks and some mud. Best set I have owned in a while, much better than the first gen MT-Rs.

They hum like any agressive tread but it has never been enough to bother me. This is my first daily driver with MT tires and for my needs, they will all be that way from now on.
