38R Surge!

Is there anything that helps limit turbo surge on the 38R? When towing heavy it surges really bad! Just thought i would rattle your cages about options on fixing this issue?

At what rpm/boost pressure are you seeing the surge? Are you still running the 1.0 wastegated housing? I have not experienced any surge with mine. I am, however, running the 1.15 nonwastegated exh housing. Bob Riley @ Dieselsite offers porting of the 38r compressor housing to address surge. You may want to talk to him about the condition you are experiencing. He talked me out of doing the porting before I installed mine. He told me to try it first without the porting.

What size tires and gearing you running. also, like Roland said, what RPM range? If it is in the lower RPMs, then a 1.15 housing will help alot. the ported housing will help in the higher RPM ranges. Most surge is in the lower ranges.

Im running stock 265's and have 3.73 gearing! When towing heavy in the lower rpm range say anything under 2,000 rpm it surges and won't pull hardly at all. What are my options?

I haven't experienced any surge with mine. It beltched one time after a linelock after taking my foot off the throttle after spooling it up a bit but not while towing. How heavy are you towing??

I don't even have to be towing that heavy to have it surge. Pulling a 28 foot enclosed trailer with five sleds isn't really that heavy! Anything under two thousand rpm and it surges bad! I just donlt want to hurt my turbo if i can do somehting to fix it!

Hmmmm, my truck is basically a lot like yours (265's, 3.73's) and we have a lot of the same mods and I don't have ANY surge issues whatsoever.

Shift down, and/or run a milder tune, these engines pull the best at 2000-2500 rpm.

Excellent advise The difference between say 1900 and 2200 is night and say for surge, power and egt's.

That's nuts, I didn't think it was possible to get surge that bad with some small single shots and a 38R.

Pulling switch backs in the mountains suck cuz you have to slow down ofr the corners and then accelerate out of them(and not hard i might add) and it starts to surge right away. In kinda disappointed in the bottom end surge. Didn't think that would ever be a problem with the 38r.
