292 oil filter adapter

Stupid questions. Did my 64 f 250 with the 292 come with a cartridge style oil filter? If it did a PO installed a adapter kit. Where do I find the adapter o-ring? I can find the adapter kits with o-ring but not the o-ring by itself. If someone has a part # I would really appreciate it. MY local parts stores are no help I am having better luck ordering online. Thanks

There aint no stupid questions regarding Ford trucks. Only stupid answers. So I will sit on my answer for a bit and wait to see what others say.

Well I am thinking that in 64 it would have had a spin on filter. Nappa part # 1515. Not sure on the trucks though. Anyway the spin on is not as good a filter but is easier to change and does not need changed as often. What I mean by that is the canister or sock type filters smaller partials better but can plug up sooner. There ya go, my .02

Thanks Arctic y block I appreciate your .02 . My problem is that there's is a plate behind the oil filter that the oil filter screws to there is a o- ring that is leaking. If I would not of touched it, it would not be leaking but I had a wrench in my hand and saw a nut. This o-ring did not come with the overhaul kit. I would just hate to order a whole adapter kit for $25 and it not be right. Like I said my part stores around here are weak at best. The 3 don't even carry the canister filters. I was hoping it was the same o-ring. I agree my old 63 chevy had the canister filter, but I am a good tinkerer I change my oil a lot. Thanks again for your 2 cents.

I believe it is a gasket and not oring that goes behind the adapter plate. The gasket is included in engine gasket kits, so someone may have a spare.

Some people resort to buying a cannister filter at NAPA, just for the gasket which is included, and which I hear will fit the adapter plate. I kind of tried this once, but bought a NOS cannister and gasket on ebay. It was too brittle and out of shape to use.

Is there enough of the O ring left that you can match it up at the parts store. Napa here as a big selection of O rings for about everything. I have two kits for back hoes that hold about 100 O ring each. It's pretty handy at times.

That was my quest later today. Was to pull it apart and make sure it is a o-ring 46 y block stated it might be a gasket. Was thinking about the old chevies. I got the pan off last night with the valve covers and front cover, found a push rod had fallen out and the pan full of mud/ gunk sludge and the pick up falling apart ,kinda stopped playing with it then. Cleaning up the mess I made yesterday. Still looking for that parts person around here that is like ND. Having better luck ordering on line just makes progress slow.

Call Steve from Concourse Parts @ 800-722-0009.There were different after-market manufacturers, and the O-rings could vary in size. He'll need a measurement, if possible, of yours.Steve

LOVE this site! My ’64 292 has the exact same issue, and I went to NAPA, CarQuest, and a local engine rebuilder yesterday with no luck. A quick browse of this forum and my problem is solved!

Thanks everyone!
Jim

Ya can also just buy some gasket material and make yer own. I have made a lot of gaskets from thin cardboard like a cereal box. Ya tap them out with a small ball peen hammer using the item the gasket is for as a template to tap it out on. ya don't even need scissors.
