Running without oil cooler?

Running without oil cooler?
I'm putting a V10 into an 89 F150 and during that process I smashed up the oil cooler. I took it off and noticed that it almost looks like you could screw an oil filter right on there if there was a threaded adapter, much like every other motor out there. I'm asking because I might not have enough room to mount the cooler and run the coolant lines to the front. Its so tight between the engine and the crossmember that I'm going to have to use a L fitting on the oil sensor so the wire doesn't rub on the frame.

Sure you can run without it - BUT - put an oil temp gauge on the darn thing, and make sure you don't cook it. Who knows what the V10 is built to deal with, but with the balancer shaft, and a bunch more valve train, and the timing chain system not being any heavier-duty then a V8, I would certainly keep an eye on the oil temp.

PM me.
The police interceptor uses the modular 4.6 and runs into that same problem.
Fords fix was to mount it right behind and slightly under the radiator support and is the perfect fix for your problem. I work on them allot and just pulled the oil cooler off one yesterday. Its sitting on the shelf if you want it.

Bill is this what you have?
The two tubes that are bent is where the coolant hoses hook onto. The other tube screws into the side of the block and sits flush with the radiator. The oil filter then screws on the tube. I want to eliminate everything and use just a small tube to attach the filter directly to the block on the third picture.

Thats what I had on my truck. The hoses were just connected together and the the cooler was removed. I did find a good cooler, and put it on. You need to find a nipple from a motor that does not have the cooler. I'm not sure what I did with mine. That was 4 years ago.

Another van oddity. Not sure if Mr-Pipeline's pics show the differences, or that is just another year change on the vans.
The SD oil cooler on my V10, the hoses come off perpendicular to the oil filter axis. And the entire thing looks different, it's not (mildly) finned like yours.

I never knew the modulars used anything like that.

I re-read post #5...you want to remove the entire cooler all the way to the block? Is this correct? If yes, you will have a lot of work to do! First, you'll need to modify the motor mounts as they bolt through the cooler extension. Also, you'll need to machine connections to the block for both coolant and oil passages to connect the hoses. Check out the picture, Is this the part you want to delete? I also have several more pictures in my album if you want to see the oil cooler extension off the motor. If space is a problem...anything is possible. However, you would be money ahead to purchase a new cooler and move forward. Hope that helps!

I think Bill's link Police Interceptor Oil Cooler Information answered my question. If you look at the eighth picture of the brand new oil filter adapter, you can see the screw in adapter that I'm looking for. Bill does that part you have, have that piece on it?

All the Vics I have worked on are retired Interceptors and come with what he shows in the first picture. I have seen that style before but don't have one.
Parts guy ed's site makes it look like Ford no longer makes it.
What are you using the truck for when its done? If your doing any time at the drag strip or towing I think you would be better off with the oil cooler.
