How much does a gallon gasoline weigh?

I believe a gallon of water is close to 8.

Aviation fuel (100 LL) is at 6 lbs.

So I would not be surpised if auto fuel weighs less.

How much does a gallon gasoline weigh?

Depends on who made it, 6.0 - 6.2 should put you in the ballpark, remember it'll be a little heavier in the winter. White gas ( well casing, Coleman Fuel, solid natural, seems to have a lot of nicknames) will come in around 5.6 or so

The same varibles apply to diesel but you can figure #2 at around 7.2 and be close.

Water is heavier than gasoline, diesel and motor oil, thats why it settles to the bottom and can rust your tanks or oil pan.

How much does a gallon gasoline weigh?

Doesn't it depend on temperature? That's why in aviation they referr to pounds of fuel instead of gallons. If the temperature goes up the fuel will be less dense and there will be less energy in a gallon, and the plane will run out of fuel sooner and come crashing down.

I know that the values given will be close approximations.

It does somewhat depend on temperature, but not very much. The numbers I posted were for gasoline at 60 degrees farenheit.

"The value of density can vary widely between different fluids, but for liquids, variations in pressure and temperature generally have only a small effect on the value of rho (density)."

How much does a gallon gasoline weigh?

Instead of all this book lernin', why not just use the ole' handy dandy hydrometer and check the specific gravity from a sample taken directly from your tank?

*Warning*
This method may cause some people to doubt printed material.

OOps, forgot to include the specs from last night :-(

6.143 pounds per gallon @ 50.4 degrees.

How much does a gallon gasoline weigh?

So you can use your hydrometer to find that most gasoline should be around SG~.68 which can be proven by
42.5/62.4=.681 (specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a fluid to the density of water)
water wieghs 62.4/7.48= 8.34 lbs/gallon
8.34 * .68 = 5.67 lbs/gallon

Don't beleive the numbers? Go out and test them, they're every bit as accurate as you can measure them.
