OK, so my better half was driving back home from an errand and the truck started misfiring and running rough. She stopped and called me indicating that it was less of a problem at under ~40 mph, but at idle, and above ~40 mph, it was nearly undriveable. I recommended she limp the truck home and park it. She got home OK. So now I have an excuse for a code reader. I am not sure what it could be, coils, pcv elbow, O2 sensors ???

Any good OBDII scanner brands/models. I need to bite the bullet and get a decent one. Don't want to damage the truck by driving it, until we figure out what is wrong and attempt a fix.

Thx,

Hi Alloro,

I would like to stay at ~$200. The 4000 model is within my range at Amazon.
Amazon.com: AutoXray EZ-Scan 4000 Scanner: Automotive
Do you have a link for the 6000? How are the Equus models? Looking at the 3160 also at Amazon:
Amazon.com: Equus 3160 Innova ABS + Professional CanOBD2 Diagnostic Code Scanner for OBDII Vehicles with Back-lit Screen and Enhanced Live Data: Automotive

Thanks,

Went and ordered this one, based on cost and reviews. Should have it by Saturday.

Been on the phone (from FL) with my better half (in VA) for over an hour troubleshooting our truck (in VA). We recd. the code scanner this morning and my wife was able to diagnose a single code (P0303 (Mode $10)), cylinder 3 misfire. Most likely culprit as we thought was a bad coil(s). I need to order 8 coils now, so will read up on options. My wife will attempt to remove the defective coil sometime this weekend, and also check on whether the spark plug is still secure (not blown out), as a precaution. If all appears well, we will initially just replace the bad coil, until I return later this month.

Any other input on the specific code is appreciated.

Just ordered 8 BWD coils from Advanceautoparts, using multiple orders and different coupons. A whopping ~$265 total for 8 coils, plus I get a $50 coupon back from them in a few weeks that I can use for oil etc. I have been extremely happy with BWD products thus far, so was willing to spend a bit more; plus includes a limited lifetime replacement warranty. Still well below the Motorcraft coils. Also considered the Accel 8-pack from AMZN for @$170 delivered for a set of 8.

Brief update: Replaced the OEM, original coil pack with a new BWD coil pack. Did not test the new coil pack prior to installation, but checked the remaining 7 new ones and the old one removed from cylinder number 3; all checked out OK. The new ones measured 0.6 for six and 0.7 ohms for one as to primary resistance. The spec. is 0.55 ohms; not sure if this is any meaningful difference. The secondary's measured anywhere from 5.35 to 5.7 K ohms. The old one pulled out was 0.7 ohm and 5.43 K ohms for primary and secondary respectively. We did not check the plug for issues, as my wife could not manipulate the spark plug socket and extensions into the hole with the fuel rail installed. I did not want her to mess with the fuel rail yesterday. May check the plug today, or let the truck remain parked until I go to VA later this month.

I put Accel cops on around 3000 miles ago, it started missing under power. I figured that it couldn't be the plug or the cops because i just put them on.
I went to autozone and their scanner said the miss was coming from #8, so yesterday I put an injector in. but the miss is still there. I think I'm going to put one of the old cops on and see what happens and also change the fuel filter. It has 243000 on it. I'll let you know it the nice yellow accel's are any good after i'm done.

It is not always better to look good than run good.

I had something weird happen to me with a coil pack. I was driving home from tahoe and the usual thing happened when a coil pack fails where it starts to misfire under acceleration and the check engine light turned on and off. I decided to continue the drive home and take it easy and I made it back. The truck sat in my driveway for a few weeks and then I took it into the mechanic to run the codes and they didn't find anything. All the symptoms are gone now too. It's like it fixed itself

Was it raining or did you go through a car wash right before the misfire started?

It was winter and I was in the snow before it happened. So it could be snowmelt.

My thought is that water got up on top of the engine and into a COP, temporarily causing a misfire until it dried out. If I'm correct then it will happen again. For now you probably just need to pay attention to see if it happens only when the engine might be getting wet. Unless you're in the mood to be preventative and replace all of the COPs.
