loss of throttle

I have a 2004 F250 6.0L diesel 4x4 and while driving down the road the throttle will quit responding. I shut the truck off and start it again and the throttle will work for a short time but then does it again and again and again. I already replaced the accelerator position sensor assembly and that didn't fix the problem. Any help or ideas would be very helpful!

Be more specific.

Did you have codes?

If the throttle sensor failed, you should have had a wrench light.

Is the CEL or wrench light on?

You need to hook it up to a scanner to read the throttle position as the computer sees it. You may have a bad wire or connection. Also not all code readers will pick up all codes.

It is nearly impossible for the throttle to have a "bad connection" to the PCM without it being detected.

There are dual redundant features and it is constantly validated -- it is one of the most carefully engineered parts of the vehicle.

Nearly impossible for even a slight glitch without the wrench light being lit.

What would be a good scanner to get?

There is no wrench light on an '04 and I have heard no definitive answer as to whether APP codes will cause a check engine light. According to the service manual, APP codes will NOT set the check engine light. So it is entirely possible that he has codes and his code reader is not reading them. You need a code reader that can read Ford Enhanced Powertrain CAN codes.

As to the APP, there are three "tracks". Each track is read by the PCM and if all three agree an accelerator pedal position is known. If one track doesn't agree with the other two, the pedal position will be determined using the two agreeing tracks and a code will be set. If all 3 tracks disagree, the engine will remain at idle and additional codes will be set.

My throttle quit responding a few months back. Ended up being chaffed Vref at one of the engine sensors (ICP?). Got the CEL and codes. '06 6.0L F250.

If you have not changed your fuel filters recently that would be a good place to start. If you still have the problem at least you have eliminated one of the potential issues...plus it is relatively inexpensive.
