I have a 2007 Limited Edition Expedition that has a three element tail light cover. The bottom red light is the stop, turn signal, emergency flasher, parking and running light. The middle light is the white back up light. The third or top red light is my question. The lamp never illuminates under and lighting condition. The bulb (that looks as if its never been light up) is a 921.
I called my local Ford dealers and they cant seem to come up with an answer as to what the light is for. The Ford parts department shows only a two position light cover, red and white. I have a 2007-2008 Ford DVD and there is no reference to it either, can someone please shed some light on that this lamp is for?
I'm stumped - went out to look at mine because of this post and nothing appears to use the upper bulb... Brake lights, tail lights, emergency flashers, and turn signals all use the lower bulbs. The only thing I can think of is that maybe Ford didn't use different tail lights for export versions. European requirements are for red fog lamps in the rear on the left side. All of my Volvos have this...
Thanks for the reply man, anyway I was traveling around yesterday evening and followed two Expeditions with the same light housing. Neither of them illuminated while they were driving.
Perhaps this is for Fire, Police and/or Rescue vehicles only in the U.S.
It sure is odd though for them not to work. Seems like such a waste of engineering talent, whats so hard about wiring it from the factory. Perhaps this fall when it warms up around here Ill look into re-wiring them so that they come on as ruining lights.
I have an 07 and never even thought of what those upper portions were for. I didn't even realize they had bulbs in them. If I can get by the PD or catch up with the Sargent on duty tomorrow I will see if theirs' is hooked up in any way. Their supervisor squad is an 07 Expy so I'll take a peek if I have a chance and see if they are used in the LEO/FD role.

Ford does that weird crap. My Mustang had a similar setup for the innermost bulb on either side. I re-wired it so that the bulb lights up with the outer 2 and the tails sequence when the blinkers are on.
I wouldn't worry about that. It might even be a Canada thing. Kind of how Canadian spec Fords all come with Foglights automatically, but we have to buy the module if you want DRL inside the US.

Checked mine (2007 Expedition EL Limited, final assy @ Michigan Truck plant, 11/22/2006), and the light has only the b/u and brake/tail light. The upper section is just a red reflector. There IS a small hole taped over w/ blue tape, but I don't think it's big enough for any bulbs - only about 1/4" dia.

same here - reflector... but it would be great to have an additional bulb there.
