Bronco Saginaw P/S pump

Lots of projects going on concurrently. I picked up a Saginaw P/S pump and mounting brackets off an E150 with a 300 and A/C. Direct bolt on in my Bronco once I took out the old pump.

It's much tidier than the stock unit without the rear mounting bracket, that's what was where the two gold bolt heads are now. Got a new high pressure hose for a van just to be safe, all that's left to do is bleed the air out.

Nice canned ham. The Sag is a much nicer unit. Now all you need is a hydroboost unit for your brakes. That was one of the best mods I' ve done to my truck. It made a tremendous difference with the braking ability.

I was looking into that unit, and actually pulled one from the b.yard, and was going to use it for my hydro conversion, but then found a bolt in replacement Sag unit made by A-1 Cardone. I didn't have to change belt or pulley or bracket. I do admit, though, that that bracket is much nicer and occupies less space.

[SIZE="4"These never came oem on any vehicle, but are a Cardone conversion from the GM Sag to a ford mount. I thought I'd throw in a pic of the hydro too, just so I could brag.

I guess my truck is becoming a Ford/GM hybrid. I now have chevy valves, a gm p/s pump, chevy master cyl., GM rear discs, Ford front discs, Chevy hydro unit with ford lines, and Chevy mirrors. AND IT RUNS GREAT...BETTER THAN EVER.[/SIZE]

Looks good. Looking forward to getting around to that mod on mine. Just have to wait for the elusive van with a 300 to show up in my local junkyard.

Thanks Baron for posting the photos.

I only see one mounting bolt on the side of the block for the bracket, are there more mounting bolts on the front that I can’t see in the photos?
Did you have to change the pulley or did it already line up with the center V groove?

I will have to watch the junk yard for a E150 six with AC as this is on my wish list also.
But I might just wait till after the snow goes away

Was the new high pressure line you bought really that much different from the old one?

Thanks again for sharing the info.

What you want is an Econoline van from the early eighties.

Jim, there are two bolt holes on the front that attach to the timing cover just like the stock pump. I changed the pulley, but only because I took the junkyard pump in as a core and got a new one - otherwise it matched up perfectly as is.

The van hose uses a different size flare fitting to the pump vs. the truck hose. The hose on the pump I pulled had been chewed through/mangled, but I would have bought a new hose anyway since it's only ~$20 at NAPA.

Baron, thanks for the info, I guess that explains why the pump looked SO NEW compared to the stuff at my junkyard. Please do a follow up post after it has been road tested… so I know if it is really a big improvement or not.

F-250… I didn’t know you could still buy that style power steering pump still. I could not find it online, I searched for P/N 20-6244 and also p/n 206244.

Check NAPA's website, I think my local one had or could get one. It was pricey, though, $95 plus a $55 core. The new pump I got was $55, and it would have been cheaper to pay the core charge for what the yard charged for the pump. All I ended up keeping from the yard was the bracket.

And I did see a feller selling a Ford hydroboost set-up on Craigslist, I may just give him a ring once I get the next pay check.

Jim: Cardone was the only one making that Sag. conversion, and they stopped some time ago, so supplies are dwindling. The only place I could find one was from Kragen/O'reiley's. I paid $75, and gave them my old one for the core since they no longer make that type. It saved me the cost of a bracket, although I would much rather have the other style bracket. Go to their website and see if it is still available.

Good luck.

Finally had a chance to take the Bronco out on the road and cruise around a bit with the new p/s pump. It's a Bronco, short wheel base and all - plus I apparently need to replace the tie rod end/drag link/tie rod yet, but fwiw a definite do if you're considering the swap.

The old pump hadn't gone south yet, but the Saginaw makes whipping that Bronco around about as easy as the dd Accord.
