How to identify an FMX

I've got a mystery transmission in one of my trucks, I thing it may be an FMX, it is cast iron. I tried to look at the article on "How to identify transmissions", but nothing about FMX's on there. Any help???

How to identify an FMX

That's the tranny I run in my truck. FMX's should have 14 pan bolts. Tough old transmission.

How to identify an FMX

If it's cast iron, and is a 3-speed auto, that is an FMX. You did not say what year truck this was in tho. Originally, the FMX was called Cruise-O-Matic. Later, "Cruise-O-Matic" was used as a marketing term for ALL Ford 3-speed automatics and the original Cruise-O-Matic became the FMX. This was in the mid-60s I think.

One word of caution - on the original Cruise-O-Matic, the selector dial had a white dot and a green dot where D and 2 would normally go in a traditional configuration. The white dot is "D2" and the green dot is "D1". In D2, the trans will start in 2nd and upshift to 3rd. If you want to start out in 1st, you need to put the selector to D1 (green dot). What this means is that if you want your trans to work the way most all other 3-speed auto transmissions work in "D" then you must go to the green dot, which is where most transmissions would have you in 2nd. Takes a little getting used to.

How to identify an FMX

John Did the white dot belong to the Ford-O-Matic, and the green to the Cruse-o-Matic?

No. The Ford-O-Matic is a 2-speed. The Cruise-O-Matic has a white dot AND a green dot. You use the green dot for what is traditionally known as "Drive", even though it is not the next selection after "Neutral" as per later convention.
