429 rebuild timing question

hey guys, i was helping one of my friends yeasterday on a project of his. He has a 429 out of a 60's something tbird he rebuilt prettywell stock except rv cam, msd hei ignition, edelbrock intake and carb. we got it to run and sounds pretty good but i cant seem to drop the timing much below 25 btc or it starts running bad and diesels when it shuts down. i wasnt there when he built the motor but he said he aligned the dots on the timing gears. anything that i should be looking for.
thanks for the help.

Is it a new balancer?
They are known to slip and then the timing marks are off.

also make sure the balancer and the timing cover cam off the same engine. there was a change where the timing pointers where in a different position

i was thinking down the same line but it seems like its running alittle hot also could it be a carb issue?

i think everything is fiqured out. I still need to get some of the build reciepts and look at the comp ratio. timed the engine a 34 deg at 3000rpm so the msd wasnt multiple sparking and found out that the factor comp ratio was 11-1 so regular pump gas probally isnt going to run that well anyway.. i know that it has flat top pistons in it now just have to fiqure out the part numbers.
