I have added one to my XLT. I installed the version that just has outside temperature and compass, but you can also go with the version that has the computer functions. It just costs a little more.
Ol Bird that was mentioned has a web site offering his kits. That's where I got mine. Here is his site: Retrofit Ford F150, F250, F350 Overhead Console Kits
Pretty easy to install if you can follow instructions.

There is someone (ol Bird) who sells refurbished overhead consoles for F250's. I believe that I read they are actually F150 overhead consoles. This guy did the research and plans for a simple bolt on kit without removal of the headliner.
Now to answer the questions can you put the lariat overhead on an XLT. I have a 09 XLT and I can not put the lariat overhead on. My friend has an 08 XLT and can not either. He had to do an aftermarket install. The issue is when you buy a lariat it has the overhead frame welded to the inside of the roof line. The XLT's do not have this frame between the headliner and the roof.

The unit I installed came out of an F150, and it only has outside temp and compass. But the unit fits perfectly as you can see by the pics in my gallery. You just have to cut the headliner.
If you buy the unit that came out of an F250, it will have the computer with Miles to Empty, Miles per Gallon, plus temp and compass. That one is more expensive, and you will have to do more wiring. If you want to go that way then you are lucky to have an '04, because it originally was offered with the overhead console. An '05 and later never had the computer functions overhead, and getting them to work on these later trucks is said to be more complicated.
Just check out that site. He explains it all pretty well.
