TFI module 1992 F250 4.9 300 conflicting reports seem no one knows!

Hello I have a 1992 Ford F250 4.9 300 manual transmission. My TFI module is located on the inner fender. I want to replace based on the symptoms I'm having. (Hesitation, hard to start, runs horrible once warmed up) the TFI module in my truck is gray in color. However, Napa, Autozone and even the Ford dealership parts dept. all say that my vehicle takes the black TFI module. Ford parts dept. even states "black". How can this be?! It's so frustrating to get these conflicting reports. My module appears to be the original. The truck only had 119,000 miles when I bought it and the unit has Motorcraft written on the front. Does anyone know about this? Thank you

Come on fellas

Someone has to know why you get conflicting reports when you contact the parts stores and even Ford! Why do they ALL say it takes the black TFI? Then everyone on here says stay with the gray??? I wonder if it was upgraded over time. And the new unit has to be the black one? Does anyone know for sure? Can someone please help me figure this out? Please and thank you.

Although im not an expert on the tfi i can tell you i work at for advance and test them often. Take yours in if someone tests them close. Now heres the catch. Test it back to back many times. I usually test five.times or more till they are too hot to hold in hand. I dont believe a cold test is accurate. I have seen them fail hot but pass cold. As the color i wish i could tell you.

Gray Module

Don't know if this will help. Rock auto lists a Motorcraft gray fender-mounted module. $92. Best wishes...jack

GRAY IS WRONG! BLACK TFI IS CORRECT FOR 1992!!!

Sorry to step on any toes or ruffle any feathers BUT....... Everyone who says to use the "Gray" TFI module for 1992 Ford F250 4.9 300 fuel injected 2wd manual transmission is wrong. Maybe once upon a time you were supposed to use gray for gray replacement. However, now your supposed to use a Black TFI module to replace the existing gray TFI fender mounted module. I bought the gray even though all the parts stores said to use black. Got it home and realized it had 3 prongs on the side that my unit doesn't have. A.Z., Pep Boys, O'Reilly's, Napa and even Ford! All show and give a black TFI for replacement. I'm bout to install it. I hope it cures ALL my problems. And doesn't make me look like an *** for going against what everyone on this site says... Here goes nothin'!!!

There are 3 (possibly 4) TFI modules.

Distributor mount grey, remote mount grey, remote mount black and possibly distributor mount black.

Distributor mount TFI modules have the three extra prongs on the side, while remote mounts do not. Your truck needs a remote-mount gray TFI module, and may have starting issues with the black one.

Where can I find the right one?

Hello. Where can I find the fender mounted remote gray TFI module? Does anyone know? Please. I really need to get one tomorrow. I'm in the Phoenix AZ area. How about a part #?

I'm not 100% sure, but I have a hunch the distributor mounted TFI module should work just fine in the remote mount location.

Websites like RockAuto.com have the gray TFI modules in stock.

What Lead said is correct. The Motorcraft module i described is a gray fender-mounted module - and it does not have the extra 3 prongs on the side. Good luck with whatever you use...jack

4.9 module

when I had my auto repair shop,I changed 4 of those 4.9 FI motors back to carberators, made the owners very happy, disable the intank pump, and put small inline pump instead, set of headers and away ya go.my 86 F250 4x4 Tow Truck with 220 Holmes and a 300 six,ran 750,000 till timing gears stripped.replaced em and gave the truck to farmer to haul bales, it has dam near 900,000 now.Propane keeps it alive.
