MPG V-10 vs. V8 on a 2002, F250, 4x4, CC sb

I like your story Adolphbell. Well said. I wanted to add the way I looked at how much more expensive a V-10 was to own, like all the salesmen and others have mentioned. When I bought my V-10 it was acually $7,000 dollars less than the 6.0L with the 5 speed ($2,500 incentive on the gasser and about $4,500 more at invoice for the 6.0L). Assume you drive 15,000mi/yr for ten years with fuel equal at $1.50/gal with the oil burner getting 16mpg and the gasser getting 12mpg you would save $4,700 in 10 years with the diesel. Assume 4 oil changes a year at $75 vs $25 and you save $2,000 in 10 years with the gasser. That cuts the diesel savings to $2,700 in ten years. Now the 7K invested at 5% after tax will turn to $11,400 saving me around $8,700 in 10 years. Turns out the V-10 may be less expensive to operate after all, I sure don't see how it could cost more. These are rough numbers, and I'd like to see other peoples justifications. BTW, I think the Ford diesels are great, especially for those people who can really use their attributes. Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in to keep this post alive, like it will need it.

Ok, back to the original subject for a minute. Our concrete contractor (and friend) had a 99 F-250 4X4 SC, shorty, with the 5.4L auto, 3.73 gears (I think) and had 305/70/16's. He said that he got around 13 mpg running the highway. Now he has a 02 F-250, 4X4, SC, short, with 3.73's, 4 inch lift and 35X12.50X16.5's. He now gets 11.5-12 mpg. So not much difference in mileage. But then you look at my fathers truck, a 99 F-350 SC, 4X4, DRW, PSD, 6 spd, with 4.10's with computer chip, exhaust, and intake. The truck now has 98,000 miles he bought it in Sept of 99. He has a excavating business, so he is pulling stuff quite a bit, tractors, Bobcats, ect. Plus all of the equipment is diesel. But anyway, I took his truck on a trip about 40 miles north of Minnapolis/St. Paul running empty up and back, total of about 420 miles and only used 1/2 a little more than 1/2 tank of fuel. Ended up getting something like 22 mpg. And when towing his 34' 5th wheel camper (12,000 lbs when loaded) down to Florida a couple diferent times he gets around 14 mpg every trip. I know that PSD's aren't for everyone, like me since now only put about 10,000 miles a year on my truck down from 30,000 a year ago. Cause hell, I am looking at getting a F-250 gasser, but if I still put on lots of miles, then a PSD it would be. But Menudo, I hope this helps alittle.

I have a 2000 F-250, with the 5.4L, 5 speed, in a SWB 4x4 Crew Cab with 4.10s.
I also have 35 inch BFG's and a small lift. After the lift and larger tires, I dropped from an overall average of 11.54 MPG to 11.31 MPG.
I have gotten as high as 13.93 MPG on a road trip (undoubtedly with a strong tail wind)
The lowest I have gotten is in the mid 9's.
I usually pull 11 MPG or so in mixed city/highway driving.

My 2002, V10, Auto, 4x4, CC, SB does not have the " Super-Duper-MPG-Calculating-Computer" onboard, so I measure my milage using the odometer and a pencil and paper.
I get 10.5 with mixed driving.
Even just one mile per gallon makes that a 29 mile per tank difference.
Just wanted to know what eveyone out there was getting, this way if I notice a big drop in milage I'll be able to know that it's just normal or something is wrong.
Thanks for all the information fellas!
