the retirn of my helper aka start'em young and a couple of pics .

got some things accomplished today on bessie , whilst awaiting the engine plate to pull the flatty , and drop the trans etc, so i can push her out and bring the good frame back home . took the valves back out , and pulled the lifters which the picture doesn't do justice guy's ... they don't show a freaking bit of wear , and the cam again the pic doesnt do it justice , is like new !!!! it's a factory rebuild and she cant have many miles on her ! the cam despite the p.o's saying it was aftermarket , was a factory 8ba . i have an 8cm merc to replace her . the last photo of the intake is the ungainly appearance of it the 2 jet with the adaptor . the reason i am looking for another merc intake ................ oh and yea the intake , timing cover etc, etc, are going in and being glass bead blasted to clean 'em ............Attachment 31250

Looking good! Don't you mean you've got 9 years before you lose the truck and have to find something else!

I think you need a new truck

You lost the one you had to your helper. You just can't see it yet

It's great to have a shop helper!! I agree, the truck will be hers. I keep buying old trucks cause the grandkids keep claiming them : ) It's a terrible problem

You should start a thread on the flathead site in the Projects in Progress forum too.

I can see why you don't like that adaptor. The carburetor looks a bit top heavy. There was a manifold on the 'bay for $50, plus $20 shipping. Your not on the Hamb, correct? Have you had anyone post a want ad for you? I'd volunteer.

Has anyone set one of those manifolds on a Bridgeport and machined a new carb base on the top? it looks like there may be enough material in the original manifold to modify to somthing better than the original. Are there water passages in the manifold? I know nothing about flatties (I like em big).

No water passages in the stock manifolds. A very early Eddie Meyer intake had a passage under the carburetor base to warm the charge.

Haven't heard of anyone doing any machine work on one. I've seen pictures of manifolds that people welded a 4 bolt plate in place of the 3 bolt. Came complete with birdcrap welds!

I've wondered about opening up the stocker too, but remember they all had exhaust crossover passages around the two runners. As cheap as cast iron manifolds are, it couldn't hurt to give it a try.

The aftermarket cams back in the day were frequently re-ground OEM cams, so it could be an aftermarket cam. Check the lift against manual specs.
