4.9L to 5.0L

I have an 1989 Ford F250, I beleive the motor is shot.... going to confirm but im thinking of just swapping it to a 302 5.0 instead. I have a donor truck, i think it is a 90, but it might be a 89 as well. I should have everything to do the swap, just lacking a little of the knowledge but i think i can do it.

Do the ENGINE mounts have to be welded in? What about the frame mounts? do they have to be welded or are they somewhat bolt on?

I have searched but yeilded no results!

Jeremy,

The engien mounts are a bolt on/bolt off on both blocks. Just so you know the 4.9L is a superior motor to the 5.0 IMHO. You will actually loose 5lb/ft of tq but gain 20HP... I'd rather have the TQ over the HP but then again I use my trucks for truck purposes... You're going to lose MPGs and the legendary reliability of the 4.9L big six. What are you using your truck for? DD? just a weekend mud rig? towing?

I would not be out of place saying that the 5.0 should have been left in cars. It's a high rev engine that likes speed; which doesn't suit it for a truck engine. I would highly suggest the 5.8L 351w if you are going to do a V8 swap. The 351w will be a bolt in also but would need all the same things changed as the 302. Speeking of which, keep in mind you'll have to change your fuel rails, engine wiring, computers, etc... Here are the OEM numbers so you can take a look at what each engine would produce when they are in good nik.

4.9L 165-HP 275-TQ (87-91)
5.0L 185-HP 270-TQ (87-91)
5.8L 210-HP 315-TQ (88-91)

PS if you are new to engine swaping I would highly suggest just doing a plug and play... IE find a good 4.9L short block to swap into the truck. They can be found on craigslist for a couple hundred bucks. How many miles does your 4.9L have? are you sure it's bad?

The engine towers have to be transferred along with the mounts, and the towers are riveted to the frame so the rivets will have to be cut/ground off and bolts used to reinstall them. You will also need a flywheel or flexplate to match the transmission in the F250, you can't use the one from the 4.9 because it doesn't have a counterbalance weight. There will also be some wiring changes to make and a computer swap, and of course the exhaust will need some work. It's certainly doable with a donor vehicle there and the 5.0 may even be better suited depending upon the axle gearing in the truck.

well i find the 4.9 a little sluggish, idn if the engine is just pouched. But it doesnt really have anypower..... but it could just be a shot engine.
I like the 302, i have one in my mustang, and my friend has one in has f150, pulls alot harder and sounds nice. I have not decided what i really want to do yet, i may get another I6, or use my friends donor truck with a rebuild 302, camm'd and a few other things.

255xxx on body and engine i think. but it was not taken very well care of, body is great, but the engine and tranny are sacked... water in the oil, oil everywhere around block... not nice looking haha. Im gonnA change oil, comp test, and see what happens n go from there just doing some research so i know what i wanna do if this engine is doner....
