Cost to change rear main seal?

Anyone pay to have their rear main seal changed on a 5.0? I was planning on doing it myself, but it has been leaking very badly(one drop per second or more when running) and its really cold outside, plus I'm trying to get the house ready for a new addition to the family, so my time is limited. What have people paid for this job? What is a fair price? Its a 93 f150 4x4 auto with transfercase shifter on the floor.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Jeff

I'd make sure it was the main seal and not something else first, put some dye in the oil and check it closely after the dye has a chance to leak out.

If the engine has to be pulled out then it's going to be more that if just the main seal needs replaced.

What weight oil are you using? try straight 30w for awile?

If you do indeed have a rear main seal leaking, I can tell you when I had my 86 F250 I had a rear main seal out that leaked something horrible, on the 460 its a 2 piece so it wasnt necessary to pull the transmission in order change it. Knowing cold weather was coming and I wouldnt get to it any time soon I priced it to be done. The mechanic I use when I cant get to something informed me it was a 7 hour job according to the flat rate book which is what every mechanic will go by you will talk to. This mechanic only charged $60.00/hr so it would have cost me $420.00 + parts, I ended up fixing it myself.......I sold the truck, fixed it permanently on my end.
I would figure around that dollar amount for a budget #, now I realize that was a 460 and your dealing with a 302 but I wouldnt think it would be much easier or harder either way.

Close 2 what Dk said..Could be even more with rates now. From what ive heard here where i live it's close to 700.00

If you can wait til warmer weather, do it yourself and save several hundreds of dollars.

Hmm 7 hour job huh? One thing labor rates are not in New Jersey is cheap, probably start in my area at $70/hr(just for s&g's the local BMW dealer is up to $150/hr, but you do get free internet and latte' while they wait lol) Sounds like I am just going to have to make the time to do it. Its a 2nd vehicle so I dont have to drive it, i just like to! I am pretty sure its the rear main, but I'll admit I do need to look it over a little more before I start yanking the trans out

Well I wouldn't recommend taking your Ford truck to a BMW dealer for repair, their mechanics would be able bodied to perform such a task but I wouldn't see the point. Find a good local garage, ask around, references and such and you should be able to get it done for a reasonable cost, its still probably be atleast $400

I just went through this on my 92. Estimates were near $800 so I did it myself and replaced the clutch while there. Seal $15, clutch kit $135, slave cyl $75. Also replaced the rubber plugs on my M5od which I learned about on this site. Took more than 7hrs but I'm on my back without a hoist. My engine is a 4.9 with a one piece seal, not sure about a 5.0. I just had my clutch replaced a month ago, and while I was having that done, replaced my front seal and rear main seal as well as my u-joints replaced for $500 labor cost. I have a parts guy so i got those seperate for a ridiculously cheap price.
