Cold Start Whine V10 6.8L Ford F250

My 2004 F250 with the V10 makes a loud whine when started around 10F or colder. This goes away within 20 seconds or so. Is this the power steering pump? Is this a cause for concern? How many others have this problem and is there a solution? Thanks.

I would maybe try changing the fluid and use the new sp trans fluid. I believe it is synthetic and might help with those cold morning starts.

Holy crap! That sounds like a table saw! I agree with the PS pump being the cause of the racket. Although we don't see anything like those extreme temps here in NorCal, the lower temps do cause problems with the various hydraulic systems at work. To fix it, our hydraulics specialist uses stick-on pads to pre-heat the oil. They are basically a small adhesive pad with a 100v power source to keep the oil tanks warm. They vary in size but the ones he uses are about 4"x4" and they do a great job. If I lived in those extreme cold areas, I would definitely use them rather than risk damage to the PS pump or even the engine.

We need to hear from other cold weather posters. Both my V10 and my Chrysler mini-van scream for 10 to 15 seconds when they get cold, say around zero. Then there's a "click" and it goes away.

My V10 is over 5 years old and the mini-van is 16. Its normal.

could be any numbers of bearings in the pulley system, clutch fan, power steering pump, alternator bearing, AC compresor clutch..

you gunna need to narrow it down some..

try to listen to the immediate area of were the noise is, course you dont have much time to work with it seems.

a quick way to narrow it down is to slip teh drive belt off, and free spin the pulleys, power steering pump, alternator..

see if anything feels like its got to much drag or feel growly/ruff ! like a bad bearing..

ps my truck has never made a noise like that in the cold morning starts..

Not the first time I've heard that noise and won't be the last. You could change the ATF in the power steering system with a good synthetic ATF. That may help some.

Yep, my 5.4 has done that a couple times so far this winter at 0F and below. Interestingly, I rented a Toyota Camry from Avis up in Fairbanks on Tuesday and it made the exact same sound when started in the morning at -28F (and it was plugged in at the time). Obviously it's not just Fords.
