AGH! steering column help!

Trying to replace the Ignition actuator rod in 1996 explorer xlt 4.0. looks like i need to pull the steering shaft out of the.... shell it sits in, where all the sensors are housed. i cant find any help in the chilton manual or online anywhere on what the heck i need to do. anybody have a walk through or some help of any sort? thanks so much!
