F2 steering gear box questions

Ya know, looking at that picture I realized that the gearbox should only be filled to the lower side of the column connection, or it is guaranteed to leak. I've been filling it near to the top of the filler hole, and everytime I check it, it's down to about where the column connects...
Yeah, get after that, fifty-two, we've got our standards here, ya know!

Thanks for the picture from the top. It will be too late when I get home from work tonight but in the morning I will once again look at mine. If I remember, where that plug is located I have an adjustment screw and lock nut. I may take it out to see if maybe some body done some thing that they did not know what they were doing.

I've been following this thread with interest and would like to note that when I took my OE steering box ( 1949 F1) apart it was filled with grease. Or so it appeared at first. Upon closer examination, the grease was packed into the corners and everywere else but where it should have been. The steering worm and sector shaft had no grease at all on them. Also, the cap on the vented filler cap screw clearly says 'heavy gear oil'. I am curious also as to when the factory changed their recommendations.http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/z...eeringbox1.jpg

I got a chance to look over my steering box today. What I thought was a screw adjust and lock nut turned out to be a grease fiting in the fill plug. Now to figure out just what kind of grease I am going to use. I have looked at what everyone else is using and there seems to be a lot of different ideas. Thanks for the pictures, they were right on target.
