think i found one
According to this site, this ones' legal for CA...
Universal Magnaflow Catalytic Converter Stainless steel, Universal product
If you go to there site, after 3 pages of showing, 49 state legal...NOT for sale in CA, this particular cat however, showed 50 state, and nothing being said about, not legal for CA use...?
Catalytic Converter - Auto Parts Warehouse
Scroll half way down, to compare with others, and then you'll come up on this cat.

I have a '99 7.3 in CA as well - been putting off chopping up the rest of my old exhaust so it'd fit in the recycling bin... kinda glad I hadn't done it yet since I might need it for smog now.
(I didn't realize that was actually a cat, I thought these trucks didn't have them.)
Would you mind sharing where you got your adapters? (in case I need to go find a pair)
Also - can they tell if a 7.3 has a tuner? I use a DP to run bigger injectors, but Jodi gave me an 'emissions' tune and I left myself the ability to hide the switch.
On a side note, I thought I would be out of CA before having to register again.... :-(

Rob, I did mine 4 months ago. Want to a smog only center. Had the DP TUNE mounted on the side of the gauges told him so and they said it was alright. I still have my cat on and want it off to. They told me there is so many tuners going for approval that they don't write up yet. Good luck. I also took the wifes car in first to feel them out but it all went good. The smoke test is important here .They didn't switch tunes and I had it in the stock tune.WOn't help you with new sticks and that is what I want to do so keep us informed, Chet

I don't have an emissions tune so I just used my modified stock tune for testing and hid my switch. With my AC codes and 38R I had no problems with the throttle snap test.
Like the tech told me BEFORE I took my truck in, "If I can't see it, I can't fail you for it"

Thanks for the good advice. There is a place here in town that seems fairly chill, so I'll go check them out when it's time.
Where did you find your adapters to make the cat fit?
I'm a welder anyway (albeit looking for work atm) so I was thinking I'd weld flanges in for the cat and use the pipe I cut out to make a 'test pipe' to use the rest of the year.
That being the case, if anyone local needs to borrow a cat for a few days, it would just be a matter of getting flanges on your exhaust.
Also - would there be any interest in a test pipe with a straight through core that happened to have very similar outside dimensions to the oem cat? (For use in states that don't require a cat... of course.... )

Did you pass? Did they say anything about the larger exhaust?
