I can only tell you what we have to deal with here - as long as you have a legal title I wouldn't mess with it. Otherwise it'll probably take tons of paperwork, police inspection, etc. etc.

I just titled a truck that I bought with a bill of sale and it was a major headache.

We use replacement titles here too and that satisfies the dmv. Your choice if you want to change it.

Hi and welcome to the site. This is what I can decipher from your vin number from the Mercury site suggested. Perhaps you have already been there but here goes.

FA = F-100 Conventional
E = No explanation that I have been able to find or figure out.
83 = Pick-up and express
B = Deluxe Cab (this consisted of stainless drip rail trim & exterior locks in both doors)
H = Built in Windsor, Ont.
R = 1954 (if it was a 53 this letter would be a Q)

Your glove box data plate will say what trans, rear axle ratio, model, wheel base & max. G.V.W.
I don't think 6 cyl's were used in Canadian 53 & 54 Ford or Mercs but I could be wrong. I think Fords only used the 239 c.i. V-8 Flathead and the Mercs. were 255 c.i. ( I may be wrong on the c.i. here) V-8 Flathead. If some one wants to correct me on this please do so.
Hope this helps - Bye for now.

Canada only used V8's in their trucks and they were all 239 ci as far as I know.

The 255 merc was used in cars.

There have been a lot of 255 mercs swapped into various trucks on both sides of the border. I pulled one from a 46 ton and a half several years ago.

Hi and thank you for the correction. This was something I was told many years ago and was not sure if it was true or not. I should have worded things better.

I know all too well what you mean. I've forgotten half of what I used to know so I get to learn new things all the time. A few years ago we all assumed that merc trucks came with merc engines, but that was found to be incorrect - but please don't ask me where it came from and who found the info.

It runs in my mind that Ford of Canada provided that detail but I could easily be wrong.

Oh well what can we do? I guess I should get off my butt and find more proof that some Merc. trucks were built in the U.S.
