88 ranger 4x4 2.0

I have an 88 ranger 4x4 with 2.0 that I bought new. It has done a wonderfull job over the years, but her heart isnt in it anymore. I'm afraid she's run her last. but i would like very much to breath new life into her as she still in great shape overall. no one here seems to be able or willing to tell me what engines will interchange, without having to swap trannys or move motor mounts. looking to put a little more spring in her step.would like to go to a 6 or a small v8

You probably do not have a 2.0L engine. That engine was only used in 4x2 manual transmission regular cabs 83-89 and never 4x4's The easiest route would be to rebuild the engine you have. For a few hundred bucks and some labor, it would run like almost new.

Its probably a 2.3, I do not think the anemic, little 2.0 was ever used in a 4x4.
If its the 2.3, engines are plentiful, cheap to rebuild, easy to rebuild, simple to R&R...and the sky is the limit on aftermarket performance parts, these motors can be built to really put out the HP.

Rebuilding the 2.3 is what I would vote for. I have a 87 Ranger that had a 2.0 in it. When it dropped a piston I put in a good 2.3 out of a mustang. Been very happy with it.

Thanks for the advise. i'll double check the engine size, but i think the truck was a special order that someone changed their mind about after it was delivered.

where bouts are you at? The 2.3 is a drop in replacement. I tell you one thing that will sure up wheather or not it's a 2.0. 2.0's were only carbuerated in 87' it would have been either a Asian or a Carter probably more likely the first one.
