Yes that is one bad a$$ effie. It is a 55 as a matter of fact. West Coast Customs built the truck for Sly and they recorded and episode of it on there show Street Customs from the Discovery Channel.

Yep, built by West Coast Customs. 347 Edelbrock Stroker, B&M A.O.D. Tranny, Ford 9", 22" & 20" Asanti Wheels, Heidt's Mustang II front suspension, Heidt's 4-Link rear suspension and an attempt at making a 56' grill have the character of a 1950 Merc. It's a sexy beast of a truck, but I'm not sure I'm feeling the wheels. I love the darkside and large wheels, but the design is too tuner"esk" for me. The rest of the truck is a sweet ride though. I even like the air scoops grafted into the side of the hood. There were 3 built. 2 more or less destroyed and Sly kept the 3rd for his own personal collection.

I thought that I read somewhere that the trucks started out as '56's but they botched the top chop and couldn't get windshields to fit so they switched to '53-'55 cabs. Is there any truth to that or was I misled?

I just watched a rerun of the making of this truck on Discovery Channel a coupla hours ago. The TV listing sez 1956 F100, but the trucks are 1955's. Three trucks were created for Sly Stallone's film.

West Coast is unclear on the concept. They claimed they added grille teeth from a 1950 Mercury to a "stock" 1956 truck chrome grille (that what it looks like to me) that they cut the lower bar off of.

No such thing for 1950 Merc (nor 1949 or 1951) came with a grille as depicted.

What the facts are...many of these Merc's when customized had custom grilles using grille teeth from 1950/52 Buicks or 1951/53 DeSoto's.

Look on ebay for pics of 1949/51 Merc's...see how many have grille teeth as original.

I have heard that same story. I also heard (probably a cover story for West Coast Customs) that Sly wanted a 56', but they were "too rare of a truck" for them to find 3 they could use in their budget. West Coast would not have been my first choice to build these trucks, but who am I???

That is good to know, I was unaware of that fact. I've seen several cutoms with the grille teeth, but always thought that it was a "deluxe" grille option. I've been educated...

Edit: Here is an article or two on the truck with pics...

thats how I got my truck in the machete movie. the guy doing the casting/prop work for the trucks in the movie needed 3 56's. He was trolling thru the Texas DMV when he discovered that I had just registered my 56. so he called me.

my 56 was not driveable, but I had a 55.. sent him pics, he put it in his vehicle catalog. they tried a 56 chop, but as noted had too much trouble with the glass, so fell back to 55's. I wouldn't let em have mine at all.

but he called back a year later asking about the 55 for Machete, and it worked out.

Cool Car Casting

I wish Chop Cut Rebuild with Dan Woods would do a old Ford Truck. Seems like this show spends a lot more time showing the actual build.

Dan Woods has a show? We used to work together in Los Angeles. Where is he? What network airs his stuff?

Chop Cut Rebuild comes on the speed channel. Not sure the times. Do a google search on it. You can actually watch it online.

I have to agree, I like the truck but not the wheels. Way to tunner-ish for me. The only reason I could think that they would use West Coast Customs to build the truck is because it would be cheaper then having someone like Foose build it for them.
