When EXACTLY did the 3 Valve 5.4L come out?

The '04 in my signature was built in January of 2004. I've heard a bunch of BS about whether it's a 2v or 3v. Owners manual says 3v, but I got called out on it earlier, so I wanted to start this thread to settle it once and for all. Any dead give-aways as to what engine it is? I'm really not trusting the owners guide right now.

When did it come out or when did they put it in a F250?
The F-150 got the 3V in 04. Not sure about the F-250

'04 F250/F350 had the 2V. NONE of those got the 3V until '05, and the change was accompanied by the Torqshift trans. If you've ever driven a 3V, you'd immediately know the difference and not confuse it with it's 2V brother. They're night and day different.

Was variable cam timing only a 3v thing, or did 2v's get the same treatment at some point?

2V's 4.6L's, 5.4L's, and 6.8L's never had VCT. None of them. The 3V 6.8L also does not have VCT.

Ok this is a good thread!

If the 3v 6.8 v10 didn't come with a vct can it easily be swappped for a 5.4 2v? Or a 6.8 2v?
Someday soon the 5.4 is coming out of my excursion either a 2v v10 is going in or something better.Me personally donot like the 2v v10. But a 3v now thats sounds like something I might be alittle more interested in

The Cam Position Sensor is on the opposite bank on the 3V 6.8L vs the 2V 6.8L.
I have not looked into whether the cam gears could be swapped that would allow you to use the 2V's Cam gear and CPS on the 3V, so I do not know if that's a feasible idea or not.
I honestly prefer the 3V myself, but IMO-swapping in a torqshift would be a much more useful and effective. I've been looking into the possibility of using an '05 E-Series PCM in our Excursion and swapping in a torqshift.

It's not that simple. The CPS reports the position of the camshaft in relation to bank 1 on a 3V, and bank 2 on a 2V.

You're referring to the 3v engines, correct?
