To EGR or not to EGR?

I have an older carbed truck with a 302. It has the temperature vaccuum switch controlled EGR. I'm getting way too much EGR, too early, so I have determined that this temp switch is probably bad. Would it be ok to cap off the egr completely? I've given a vaccuum source to everything that was inline with the EGR valve and temperature switch. I don't seem to have any detonation or any drivability problems with no EGR, but will I see problems down the road? Thanks for your help!
