2006 5.4l Questions

What is the best air intake, programmer, muffler for an 5.4l?
I see a few used intakes on ebay.
The programmers I have not clue about. I like the look of the edge.
I would like a aftermarket muffler, like a glasspack or Flowmaster series 40. All I want to do is cut the stock muffler out and clap the new one in.
Does anyone know the size muffler i need. looking like 3".
Thanks

Pipe diameter is 2.5 inches. I did a straight up muffler swap on mine and used a 40 series flowmaster. Has a good tone but not loud enough for my taste.

I first cut the stock muffler out and installed a flowmaster 40 and it had a nice sound when first started and the silent the rest of the time. Since then I installed a straight pipe in its place and sounds mean! No drone and finally has a nice tone.

I did the Gotts mod with a drop in K&n and noticed a difference in throttle response right away. Then I installed a magnaflow true dual, cut before the y ran 2 pipes into dial in dual out Maggie with true x internal x pipe then 2 pipes straight out the back. Sounds mean as hell when you stomp it but quite when crusing. I also got 2 mph better gas mpg 19 mpg on my last tank!!!

Air intake are not worth the money for the most part. A programmer is a great option to add and it will give you the most benefit. Most people on here will give you some different options on the programmers but they all do roughly the same thing. The muffler don't expect much from it other then some more sound. I switched out mine for a Magnaflow and like it alright but not as loud as I expected it to be so I may switch it again to a series 40 flowmaster.

I second Coskid's statement about the CAI. We here like to call CAI's "engine bling" because you're only dressing up your engine without gaining anything but noise.
This is only beneficial if you have changed your MAF sensor, headers, exhaust and you have a custom tunes.
Most programmers/tuners are set up to work with a stock truck (no intake & exhaust). Keep that in mind if you go to purchase one. If you're highly mod'ed, then custom tunes are your ONLY option and you must let the person building your tunes know about all of your mods.

Happy hunting!

Im not to familiar with gas motor, but I was going to put a cone filter on it seems like it would suck more air.
I think I will get the edge or SCT.

CAI are worthless unless you get a tuner with custom tunes to allow for the increase in airflow. You won't gain big numbers from a programmer on a gas engine like you will on a diesel. But you will get much better throttle response and tranmission shift stategies with the right programmer. I recommend an SCT X3 with custom tunes. If you go with an Edge, get the Gryphon from Power Hungry Performance with the custom tunes.

Would this be good without a custom tune? Or would a stock replacement k&n be better?GREEN FILTER AIR INTAKE SYSTEM 2008 FORD F-150 - eBay (item 370244826661 end time Jan-05-11 06:31:35 PST)
I just am looking to get alittle better fuel mileage.
And a good sounding exhaust.

You're not likely to gain any mileage with a CAI. The K&N drop in might yield better results, but most people will say that neither is worth the price.
In all honesty, if you want better economy, then you can do a few things:
- Lighten your truck as much as possible. Remove all tools and excess items that you carry that aren't a necessity
- Alter your driving habits some. Softer take offs, more coasting, etc.
- Get a tuner with a nice 87 octane custom economy tune.

I would suggest the Gryphon from PHP or the SCT from Mike @ 5 Star. Mike is by far the most responsive of the tuners that sponsor here, and I have heard good things of his products.

Agree with MCDAVIS. If you insist on going with a reuseable air filter, stay away from the oiled gauze types as the oil can foul the MAF sensor and trigger codes and affect driveability. Get a dry type reuseable air filter. Truthfully, the air intake system that Ford has on their newer trucks is pretty efficient in the RPM range that the engines are going to be used in. The only gain is the cost of the filters at change time. But it will be quite a long time to break even.

Where is a good place to get a dry filter? IM going to do that Gotts Mod with a new air filter and get an tuner.
