For tires, my vote goes for BFG AT.

When you're dealing with the six, I usually recomend anything that will provide the most amount of power. You have to consider the six banger is only putting out something like 110 horse at the wheels, at best. It's a fine running six - but only if it's in healthy condition! These things are only making 145 horse.

I run 38-40 psi in my BFGs.

I agree with what your saying to a point. I don't think that either the 4.9 or 5.0 should have to turn big tires.

The horse power isn't really an issue. It makes low end torque so running 30 inch or 31 inch tires isn't a big deal for it.

The 302 is the engine that really doesn't like larger tires at all.

I had a 4.9 with E40D in my old truck and ran 31s on it and it did just fine with them.

Really? I didn't know you had a 4.9 / E4 combo. What gear ratio did you have with the 31's? Was the truck FWD?

It was a 2wd as well. It had 3.08 gears in it. It actually did better with normal driving than my truck does now. Although it wasn't as fast.

You had the same setup I did then. Was the truck a shortbox too? Open diff?

Why do you say it did better with normal driving? Do you mean fuel mileage??

It was a long bed with an open rear end. The difference between the two wasn't that much, but the 4.9 just seemed to feel a little better when driving conservativly. It did about the same for fuel mileage, but just drove better around town, because the 300 doesn't mind being lugged, where the 302 doesn't like lugging around all that much. Its because of the 300 and it low end torque at really low RPM. I'll see if I can find a picture of it.

I just found one and scanned it. Here it is sporting the crappy General Ameriway XT tires that came factory. They were pretty lousy tires. Here it was only 1 or 2 years old, before the 31 10.50s. Notice it still has the factory tailpipe. My Dad bought it new. As soon as I got it in 98 the old style BFG AT pre KO that say Radial All Terrain and a pair of chrome exhaust tips went on.

Sorry for the thread hijack.

I think the Michelin LTX MS tires are worth the price, because the last for a long time. My Dad put close to 100k miles on a set on our old 85 F150.

Yep they were stock size and were on there for about 8 years from around 40,000 miles until around 140,000 when we got new ones. I can't remember exactly, but they definitely had 80,000-90,000 miles on them, but they were totally shot. By that I mean there was nothing left of them. They might have been a heavier duty tire though. I seem to remember my Dad saying they were 6 ply tires. I don't know what the LTXs are now.
