How many have blown the high pressure power steering line?

I just replaced my 3rd HP power steering line last night( 3rd in 300K so i'm not bitching to much), always blows the same point....fitting comes apart where it attaches to the pump.

if you could please post up if you have had to change it and how long it lasted....I'll start, mine have gone about 100K plus or minus 10K, almost thinking about making it a 100K maintenance item.

130ish k on mine. I just replaced all mine this summer along with the transmission cooling lines. Rust had gotten the better of them.

As Ed would say "OEM Baby", BUT, I did save an intake boot, and run it all the way up my IC tube, so there would be no rubbing of the pressure line and the tube.

You should probably include 2wd vs 4wd and oversize or stock tires. Still factory hose on mine at 349k. 2wd with stock tires.

Good point. It's always the lifted trucks that break the steering box too.
Mine is still original with factory 225/70 r 19.5

My neighbor just had to replace his on a 1996 F250 with 7.3L diesel. I believe his odometer reading was ~140,000 miles. This was on a stock truck running stock tires. He brought it over to show me the failing part. There's a pathetic looking C-clip that holds the high pressure hose within the screw-on fitting at that pump body. This C-clip wore down over time on his and then let the high pressure hose blow out the side of the PS pump. Bad deal if it blows free when you're off-roading. Either carry a spare high pressure hose with some extra Tranny Fluid and tools - or convert to a GM Saginaw style pump. Those high pressure hoses on the Saginaw style PS pumps will not separate from the PS pump housing. I'll be looking for some type of Saginaw style upgraded PS pump for mine because I'm running 40" tires out in the boonies on a 2001 F250 Super Duty.

not the results I was expecting, I figured with what I thought was a crappy design I would see similar experiences to what I have experienced. Looks like I am the only one that has checked the "three or more" box. Maybe I should buy an OEM line and keep the oriellys for a spare.

off to look around on Ed's site ...................

My neighbor researched this subject on the Forums after replacing his PS hose. He did find it to be a recurring problem. The C-clip connection on the Ford hose is way flimsy. To the extent that I consider it a design defect. This will leave you stranded when it blows free of the pump - hopefully somewhere rather convenient - until a new high pressure hose can be installed and the system re-charged with tranny fluid.

I have replaced mine twic in 266,xxx miles but not due to failures from bursting. The first one was replaced needlessly due to leaking. It was replaced by a Carquest line which just recently began to leak with the fitting at the hydroboost. I went OEM and found the OEM line is much better protected from abrasion and while more expensive than others, is much better built. One thing which may be causing the line to blow out at the pump is not replacing the teflon seal. The hose will seal without the teflon seal, but you may be putting too much force on the pivoting part when it bottoms out and shouldn't since the seal isn't there. Who knows, but the tubing isn't quite bent right on the OEM piece either.

I will be having the custom hose shop here in the Valley (Orme Brothers) build me a new hose if mine fails. They all drive Powerstrokes there, though most are six-oh's, but they know the demands these trucks put on hydraulic lines, and they have the best stuff with which to make replacement parts.

No off-the-shelf replacements. They're "made to a price".
