I'm sure you'll need a wider wheel. Look at the tire manufacturer's website, they should list recommended rim widths.

what is the stock rim width for these? i work at a tire shop and it seems like whenever a tire that size is put on it is atleast on a 9 or 10 inch wide wheel.

The factory steel wheels are 16x7, and I think the factory Alcoa's are too. A 305/70 is doable on a factory rim, but you're going to get a lot of ballooning out of the tire. A 16x8 or a 16x9 is a much better choice. In fact, I just pulled up Cooper Tire's website. According to them, a LT305/70R16 should only be mounted on a 8" or 9" rim.

Personally speaking, I've got 305's on 16x8's on the Fodge, and they look & ride just right. Great contact patch at 40lbs, and enough flex in them still that they don't beat you to death.

12" wide tires make a poor choice for traction (besides deep mud) fyi.
they'll also knock your fuel economy back.

oops.the games' back on.
lets go pats!
