Is that the real deal, they look like they were made of cast medal. They look good on the hoods too I might add, I can see why Fordman75 is interested in them. Cool looking piece. Looking forward to finding the dimensions and see how this thread developes. Thanks for sharing those photos.

Yes, they were functional.* They were only on the Big Job trucks, F800 / F900 and larger.* There was a round hole ( approx 4" in diameter ) cut in the hood under the scoop.* A formed metal air duct attached to the carburetor and ran up to just under the hood, with a gasket of sorts to seal the assembly to the hood when closed. Ther scoop was mounted through the hood with (6) 10-24 studs and nutted on the back side.** The scoops and the scoop grille are a diecast metal construction.* The grille was chromed from the factory. To my knowledge, the was not any water diverter* in the scoop assembly, but the air duct had a cable operated plate to close off the air flow for some reason when operating.* I have only seen pictures of the hood and air duct seeembly.** There are exploded drawings in most 56 parts manuals from Ford.

Hood Scoop
As I remember these scoops they originally were mounted with the opening towards the windshield thus keeping most of the water out. If I remember correctly they used basically the same scoop from 57-60 but were mounted over towards right side. I wouldn't mind to have one of these myself.even if I had to make it. Many years ago my Provincial Government brought in car crushers and cleaned up the province, beautification program.A lot of good junk went for scrap and a quick buck.

I thought they turned them around facing backwards starting in 61.

Hood Scoop
The only 56 I remember was backwards, possibly owner turned it so it didn't pick up as much water. It ended up on a F-100 facing forward. A friend of dad's had a 59 or 60 and remember riding in it and was off to right side and backwards, also was 3-4 others around the same way. Canadian thing maybe Could be an old mind but don't think so as always thought they were neat but should have been facing forward. Looked in 48 -56 parts book, it shows facing forward and only for 56. Interesting to know they were used beyond 60. Thank you

Your right, that scoop matches hood design of 57 - 60 hoods. I realy would like to try making the 56 style out of fibreglass for my 56 Merc. coe. Even if it wasn't perfect not many would know the difference. Better than paying the price of the last one I seen for sale. Can't wait for measurements

Seeing those pictures of the scoop had me thinking of great custom idea for the F trucks. I reckon a good idea would to cut a piece out the hood the shape of the scoop, make the cut about 1/4'" bigger then dimensions of the scoop and then mount the scoop to the air cleaner to make the air cleaner functioning. We had a 70's muscle car with the same concept. I reckon it would look neat.

But the problem with trying to do a shaker scoop on the 53-56 F100 is the huge gap between the hood and the air cleaner. So unless you are running a huge blower or tunnel ram intake you'll need a really tall spacer between the air cleaner and scoop. You can see in the pic that 53Ford posted of the big job engine the size of the box needed to reach the hood opening. It would look cool with the hood closed but may look weird with the hood open. But if it's something you think might be cool go for it!
