Measure struts

I need to replace the struts on my shell , but I have no idea how to measure them. Do I measure them all the way extended, or all the way closed? Or do I need to measure a different way?

Thanks for the info. I've been looking on ebay for some since they appear to be alot cheaper on there than in the stores.
