Gas tank rust

Pulled the tank out of my 49 f2 today to find 1 baffel on the bottom and lots of rust. I was wondering anyone had success with the rust sealers that are available

I took mine to the local radiator shop. They boiled and coated it for $200. I had no past knowledge and some friends recommended it. Its only been about 6 months now but so far so good.

por 15

I used the POR15 kit from summit . Its a great product. Tank is like new. follow the step by step instuctions and it will fix the tank. I used my shop vac. to help dry the inside. Blowing air in not sucking it out.

There's lots of good historical threads about products and processes to do this.

Go to the "Advanced Search" and type in "Gas Tank Rust" or "Seal Gas Tank" - with the quotation marks, and they will pop up.

You need two more posts to use the search so post 2 quickies here to get up to 25 - then search.

i had the same problem with my tank some 15 years ago. don't remember the name of product, but was good until newer fuels showed up. then it turned to gunk. some of the sealers are not compatible with todays fuels. make sure the product you use, ---is.

If U have the tank coated at a rad shop be sure to clean out the gas pickup tube in the tank as the coating may clog it.
Caused me to have to pull the tank after insalling it. PITA!!

Fortunately the guy at the radiator shop pointed that out about the gas pickup tube. My is just a small brass needle valve so we spun it off before the boil.

My 48 gas tank had a lot of rust and crap in it. I used a Hotsy high pressure washer, and with the very hot water it clean it up. I used a Por 15 kit and it worked out very good. I did my 53 Ford gas tank about 12 years ago and nothing in the fuel filter yet and that is using 10% GASAHOL.

I cut my tank open(after it set outside opened up for over a year-yes, I was still nervous) and there was probably 1/4" to 1/2"of rust in the bottom of it. There is no way that I would have wanted that on my truck knowing how much metal must have rusted away to create that level of scale. I'm happy to have a new tank. OTOH, I coated my "vintage" 1986 motorcycle tank as it's a rare bike and new tanks are not available.
