Xtreme 4x4 or Xtreme energy cam ?

Like Monster said, they are going to hit at different RPM ranges. Heres an example of 2 comp cams, 1 a 256Xtreme, the other a 256 4x4Xtreme
If you look, they are very similar, but the 256 4x4 has a earlier opening event (lower number) than the 256 XE. It also has slightly less duration than the XE, those numbers tell me the 256 4x4 will start pulling stronger and quicker at a lower rpm than the regular XE. It will also flatten out sooner on the topend. While on a dyno both would probably make similar HP, the Tq on the 4x4 will rise faster and higher and drop off sonner than the XE. The XE will have a slightly shallower Tq curve, but will hold its HP longer/flatter at the top end of things. Thus if you were looking at these cams for a mustang motor or such wanting to scream down the street I would suggest the XE, but for a heavy p/u wanting more off the line grunt I would suggest the 4x4.

Thanks for explaining that, it will be going in a F-250 so i am going with the Xtreme 4x4 cam now im just stuck on the X4262H or the X4270H grinds. I am leaning towards the smaller one but the bigger one does interest me, i will be ordering one of them today and if anybody has used one of these cams i would like to hear your thoughts on them

As for the 270, I am very happy with mine.

I might go with the 262 cam for a more streetable nature, this truck will not be my daily driver but i would like to be able to hop in her and drive 500 miles, maybe im just being a puss. i dont know but i am trying to find the right mix of reliability and power, what do you like/ dislike about your cam

Haven't dynoed this setup, however with the exception of the cam, the build is very similar to the build that Trick Flow did with a 460. Their numbers came in at 600HP and 547 Tq. When we entered the build into a desktop dyno (which is actually fairly accurate when you give it the actual flow numbers of the heads) it showed this combo as doing around 480-500Hp and 500Tq with the peak being around 5000-5500 and starting to fall off hard by 6000rpm.

- It's definitely strong as he-double-hockey-sticks. The heaviest I have had the truck loaded by itself was probably around 10,000 with a N14 Cummins diesel sitting in the bed (was just a bit overloaded that day), as for pulling a trailer, a flatbed with a 85 Crown Vic on the interstate (figure 3800-4000 for the car, 2800 for the trailer, so 6800ish plus the truck) or a homemade trailer with a 460 powered 78 Bronco (3800 for that trailer and 5000ish for the Bronco, so call it close to 9000 on the back) and it handled them with no problem's. The bronco was even being pulled in some pretty serious hills on some Ohio back roads near the Pa line taking it to the mud races.
- It works very nicely with the stock converter on the E40D
- It comes on quick when you stomp on it.
- The ramps are pretty fast and steep, even with the roller rockers its a little noisy with the aluminum valve covers (of course they amplify the sounds too)
- When Comp says it starts making power at 1600rpm they are not lying. With the 3.55 gears and 35" tires, going down the interstate at 55 you are barely into where the cam is making power and at times it feels like you are lugging. Knock it out of overdrive and get the rpm's above 1600rpm and hang the hell on tho, you stomp on it and it goes.

I've got an XE262 in my 460, M-100, two wheel drive. It doesn't sound as bad as the 270, but still sounds great through my 40 series flowmasters. It makes tons of power. The BIG power starts around 2000 RPMS, and is still pulling hard when my valves start floating around 5000 RPMS. I need some stiffer valve springs. I used a dyno program too, and it gave numbers in the 440 HP, 510 Ft/Lbs range. Hope this helps.

Never considered it as the original motor in the truck was a 5.8 and the BB started life as a 429. However, I have always planned to eventually go to EFI, at one time I was even toying with using a AirGap or Victor intake and mounting the bungs so I could go sequential EFI with a stand alone ecm. What I am looking/saving to do now though, is go with the FAST system, which is a hi-pressure 4150 style throttle body set up. Since I still have the hi-pressure pumps in the tanks, all I have to do is pull the Aero regulator I am using to drop the fuel pressure down for the carb, and plumb the lines into the FAST throttle body, hook the trans controller for the E4OD up to the TPS, and program the settings on the FAST ecm and should be good to go!!

I haven't had he best of luck with my 460, but mine has the 270 comp xtreme 4x4 cam and I like the cams behavior. With a c6 and a 2000 rpm furnace brazed torque converter, It does good. Gets around 12 mpg with a holley 670 TA in a 78 f250 4X4 flatbed with 34" Super swampers and 4.10s now that the bugs are working out of it, it rips pretty good, breaks a lot of u-joints, and when you step on the gas, something happens. The idle is a little rough, I idled mine down pretty far and it sounds mean but when the converter stalls at WOT, it will break the tires loose on pavement with a detroit locker in the back, so there is some torque at lower RPMs but the driveability is fine if you lean the primaries down a bit to get rid of the "bark" so to speak when just cruising. Another consideration is where you time the cam. That can make a difference on a 460 with any cam Mine is "Strait Up" and I am also at 6000 ft in elevation and I still have plenty of vacuum.

Sorry for the steal OP, however my engine advisor out of The Block Shop told me the Xtreme Energy 270H is a strong cam for a moderately built 460 with the aluminum bolt ons, headers, etc... in a truck.

Thanks for the video! Its like a teaser! I have the Xtreme Energy 270H in my 460, yet to fire up since resto is still in progress. I sold my set of Super 44's for 50 Series SUV - what model of 50 series are you running?

I'm running the 50 series delta flow, all mandrel bent tubing (imo, the only way to go) with flat band clamps bolting it all together. And the 270 works well... the cam is not quite as choppy as the video makes it sound. That was shot in the morning when there was still frost on everything. Once things are warmed up good, it smooths out a bit more, still a distinctive lope, but very streetable. We've used it in a couple other 460s... one a complete stocker, and another with stock heads and a bit better pistions, its worked well in both those too.
