insturment voltage regulator?

Is there a insterment voltage regulator on a 96 F150 4.9? I am getting the occasional dancing needles and was thinking that could be the cause. I know the older trucks had one and that was the #1 cause of the dancing needle.

Is there one and if so whereabouts is it located.

You might check the voltage output from the alternator and see if it is changing.
