What trans to fit a 300 I-6?

Hey guys, I'm swapping an '89 EFI 4.9L into our '64 F-100 4x4, wondering what trans (stick) that these trucks used that would bolt up. From what I can find, my truck originally came with a 292 V8, BW T-18 and a Dana 24 transfer case (divorced). The trans code on the data plate is "F".

I was going to use the 5-speed out of the donor truck, and it's married t-case, but I'm thinking how much easier it'll be to not have to re-figure driveline angles, hydraulic clutch plumbing and such, and I may be needing the 5-speed for the wife's truck, as the E4OD is on it's last legs.

Is there a bellhousing to mate a T-18 to the 300 block? If not, what trans swap would be easiest? An NP435? There is one on Craigslist local to me cheap, got me thinking.

What manual transmissions were available in slicks with the 300 I-6?

If you have a truck bell, the T18 or np435 will work. Depending on your axle ratio, you may wish you had OD.

As for replacing an E4OD with a stick, remember the computer will miss that E4OD, so you have to fiddle with that as well.

Back to the six: if you have the right bell, just about any trans will bolt up. Bell to engine is the same as SBF, so everything from old 3 speeds to the ZF 5 speed will work.

So you are saying that there IS a production bellhousing to fit a 300/302/351 pattern and a T-18? What about the clutch?

I guess I haven't asked for sure, but assumed the 292 bellhousing pattern is different.

Overdrive won't be missed, this truck will problably never see the highway. It'll be an in town cruiser/ shop truck.

The T18 was used from 56 to 73 and then replaced by the T19. Your 1964 T18 will not bolt to any bellhousing produced from 1965 on as the input shaft and bolt pattern was changed for 65.

All 300 and Windsors either used a 10" or 11 " clutch and pressure plate depending on the GVRW. Most aftermarket replacement flywheels are drilled for either pattern and all use the same spline count on the clutch disc.

NP435 is a better transmission and will bolt to the Small block bell unless it is a 64 unit. The NP435 is used from 64 to 85 in F series trucks.

I sure did like the NP 435 in my '78 F150.......

There is one on c-list near me for $80, says it will fit Ford 2wd or 4wd???? How's that possible? I'd assume I would need a 2WD version to retain my divorced Dana 24?

From what I'm finding there was one a 10 spline input for the NP trans, so finding a clutch should be fairly easy?

58 to 77.5 F250 and 59 to 65 F100 four wheel drives used a divorced T case and the same transmissions as a 2 wheel drive.

F100/350's prior to 1965 came with the Borg Warner T-98. There was no such thing as a Warner T-18 until 1965.

TRANS code F = 1956/64 Warner T-98 / 1965/93 Warner T-18.

1965/66 F100/350 300 I-6 manual transmissions: Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all syncromesh (F100/250) / Warner T-85N 3 speed overdrive (F100-2WD only) / Warner T-87 3 speed manual (F350) / Warner T-18 4 speed / New Process 435 4 speed.

ND, I had found that out after posting that it was a T-98, but didn't bother to mention it, as I had read the T-18 and T-98 share the same case, so I'm still in the same boat.

I'm still going to scrape all the grease off the trans and verify that's what it is before I go looking for an NP435, who knows what could have been swapped in over the years.
