There will be several times that i may need to make trips into wichita, or newton, to go to a lumber yard or hardware store. Both of these cities are 30 or more miles away. I really despise sitting in a truck for half an hour or more at 3300 rpms. It really would eat gas then, as if it wont already, and i cant stand the nagging feeling of "man i wish this thing had one more gear"
This truck is going to be my heavy hauler, as well as my home depot, lowes, truck. No sense in winding her to kingdom come when i can easily buy an od tranny and be done with it.

I get 11-13 mpg empty (10k) at 55 mph. Depending on hills and wind.
Half that loaded heavy on backroads.
I wouldn't bother with the OD if you use the Y
1. 3k to does not bother it.
2. Do to the mass and weight of the truck it wouldn't pull OD it if it had it.
3. Contrary to popular belief, as long as you can drive country roads when your loaded heavy, these old trucks work just fine stock.
Not trying to take the wind out of your sails, its your money spend it any way you please.

Have you ever thought of getting a brownie box for the truck? They typically have three gears, and sometimes you can find one that has an overdrive gear in. It goes right behind the main box.
I've even heard of people installing a regular four speed backwards behind the main box, and using it as a brownie. There's at least one person here that has done it: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...ed-w-3-od.html

Well its final guys. I am heading out on sunday with my uncles truck to pick up a 7.3idi and zf5 combo out of a 93 f250. The seller was going to use it on a swap but ran out of time and money. It runs and drive great but the truck itself is dinged and dented and rusted to hell. I told him i just want the engine and tranny. He wants it gone so he settled on $500 for both the tranny and 7.3 together. I couldnt pass it up for the price. He has a 6.9 with banks setup on it, and says the motor itself is unknown in condition, i am trying to convince him to sell me the banks kit off of it as well for $150, as he only wants $250 for the whole engine. But i dont have room for 2 idi's in my uncles truck bed. But the choice has been made. Yaaaayyy!!!!!

The guy is giving me the entire banks setup for $150. So i will need to set that up before it goes into the truck, itll be easier that way. I will need tomget a pyro and boost guage for it also. I have read where many guys have disconnected their wastegate actuator on the turbo, wired it shut, and turned the fuel up 2 or 3 flats. As long as the egt temp and boost are monitored and kept in check, i have read that i can easily get 200 hp and 400 tq out of the idi, safely as well. That sounds like a plan to me.

I agree a hundred percent on fixing the dump, handiest thing I have ever had.
Why all the fuss, if your not going to go over 50 or 55 on country roads?
I have the same ratio as you, 633/881, I have a 5 speed but 5th is direct, my truck will run 55-60 down the freeway with no problems, I've gone 70 in it, I was just curious if it would go that fast, it still had some left.
It is slow when its loaded heavy, and I stay on the backroads, but there is a certain fun factor using these old trucks as they were designed.
If your dead set on a big project, more power to you...
Or you could find a good running 292, bolt it in, and use the truck..
Good luck,
Greg
