'96 Explorer 5.0 & 4r70w into '73 Bronco
Hi,
I recently purchased a '96 Explorer limited as a complete vehicle. The vehicle was totaled, but still driveable, so I know the engine and transmission are perfect. I plan to install the engine and transmission into an Early model Bronco('73). My plan is to simply-(ha ha)- swap the complete engine, transmission, computer and wiring into the Bronco. Is there anything that is not going to work as far as the electrical is concerned? I figure the front dress, cooling system and brake master cylinder will take some modification, but I need to know about the computer system.
I have spent tons of time on Classic Broncos reading up on this swap others have done.
It seems everyone is swaping to an RJM harness or a Mustang harness, and Mustang computer, any reason as to why?
They also seem to be swapping the coil packs for a distributor. Is this necessary, if so, why?
If I am able to use the Explorer engine harness, can I also use the transmission harness?
The Explorer used 4- O2 sensors(2 behind the exhaust manifolds and 2 behind the cats). Will I need all four, or can I get away with just the 2 behind the manifolds? If not, do I have to use cats?
I am sure there are many other questions that will come up, but this will at least get me started.
Thanks,
David

Only 2 sensors are needed, the rear pair can be eliminated with O2 simulators and then cats aren't required.. but there's no reason you couldn't fit aftermarket cats like those from magnaflow, they are downright cheap at $80, flow much better than the factory pieces, and still clean the exhaust.

Thanks Paul,
I did not see any reason as to why it wouldn't work as long as I keep everything the same throughout the swap. I am sure there will be plenty of codes thrown my way at first. I will try to run cats, but with only 24" between the frame rails, it gets a bit tight. If I do, I think they would have to go in behind the t-case.

There's actually no need for dual cats either, and considering the space constraints under these trucks with the T case and front driveshaft in the way a 2 into 1 exhaust system fits better, and works and sounds just as well as duals. Here's the exhaust on my truck right now, that's a Magnaflow cat right next to the T-case just after the Y.

That looks really good Paul. I am more than greatful for your assistance with this swap. This is actually my second Bronco I am completing, but it is the first with a stock, late mode fuel injected engine and tranny setup. Same ballpark, but a completely different league!!
I had my other EB exhaust done by a local shop. Due to the dual transfer case setup, they had to run a 'y' pipe as soon as they could from the drivers side headers to the passenger side and dump straight into a single glasspack. I thought dual's would be better, but the 'y' pipe created some impressive backflow and a ton more torque than I expected.
I should be able to run the same type setup with this EB. Thanks for letting me know I don't need all four O2 sensors. Any idea of a part number for the simulator O2 sensors? I have done some research(though not enough[I don't think there is ever enough research} but have not come up with much).
Thanks,
David
