Question tired 87 2.9

I have a 87 ranger 4x4 with a2.9.It's tired ( 300kmi including 3tours in the Artic Circle). I bought a used 91 2.9 that ran (it sound good),pulled it , took it home, put it on the stand, pulled the pan, and saw some heavily scarred berring caps ( crank was rubbing the face of the main caps ).
Everything on my Ranger is in perfect shape, otherwise. Is a 4.0 a straight swap with a 2.9? Is it advisable. I ask this because the rebuild on a 2.9 is more than a 5.0. And oh ya!, It's a California truck, smog wise.
Need some ideas. Thanks
