Clutch/Pilot Bearing

Clutch/Pilot Bearing
Ok so I'm doing a clutch job on my B2. I pulled the old pressure plate, disc, pilot bearing, to find a spring and hand ground washer stuck in place. The washer appears to be made out of a lock washer ground flat.
I took them to my local Autozone, guy behind the counter said he had never seen that setup behind a pilot bearing before. He said most dont have any room behind the pilot in the crank. He "thought" maybe it was there to keep pressure on the input shaft???
This is my first auto clutch replacement, can anybody shed some light on the subject.
BTW, I punched a new washer the correct diameter and hopefully right thickness.
