Rear Main Seal

I think my rear main seal has gone bad in my truck because oil is leaking between my tranny and oil pan. Is there anybody that can help me tell me how to do it or a website I can go to and see it done? I have a 1980 Ford F100 with a 302 and a C6 transmission. HELP!!!!

if its not lifted, geta some 2x6's lift it in the air about 10 inches so u can sit under it, then drop the tranny, and replace, its fairly easy when u get the trans out, i did it twice by myself, just get two thick tow straps and u can do it urself, not fun or easy but can be done, i even got the trans back in myself with the straps n a jack

Before you do anything related to the rear main seal i HIGHLY suggest you make sure that it is the problem.

I suggest you take your truck to a car wash and wash down the whole underside and then pay close attention to where the oil is coming from. Just because you had found the oil in that area doesnt mean it hasnt blown back from the valve covers or the intake manifold. *The back of the intake manifold is a common place for oil to leak and it would end up leaking right where you talk off.

After you do that and you find it is the rear main seal, i highly suggest you figure out a good weekend to tackle it for it will take you some time to do. Make sure to have all the right tools to do the job first and GET a good manual for your truck. It should provide you with steps to replace the seal.

For now i suggest you search around on google (just type in "1980 f-100 rear main seal" or something of that sort) and find a tutorial of someone who has done the work.

Thanks, I have a Haynes manual for the truck so I will look in there, is there a different name for it because the last time I looked it up there wasn't a rear main seal in the index. Anyways I will try the way with the 2x4's and have it done in a weekend hopefully.
