Oil Capacity 4.0 Liter SOHC

I just purchased a used 1997 XLT and I always do my own oil changes. Everything is fine except this: I put 5 quarts in and it is showing a quart low. I have owned two other explorers but both were the base 4.0 motor. Does the SOHC require more oil? If not, why would my dipstick be off? For reference it does have the towing package so I don't know if they increased oil capacity as a part of that package (it never did on the base motor). Anyone that can help shed light on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Paul, I am 99% certain your engine holds 5 qts with filter.

Two things come to mind on the low reading. First, make sure the dipstick dosen't have a double gasket at the handle end. Then check the dipstick tube; it may not be seated in the block.

You could also try cleaning the dipstick. If it has any wax or silicone residue on it, the oil won't stick to the metal, and you'll get a false reading.

Oh yes. WELCOME to the forum!

My '97 SOHC requires 5 quarts of oil when you change the oil and filter (as does all other '97-'01 SOHCs). In addition to what was mentioned above, it is possible that someone installed the wrong dipstick in there. Go to a Ford parts dealer and bring in your dipstick to compare to a new one. If they don't match up identically, get the new one.
