Hard starting, at a loss

OK here is the deal, gp controller replaced and works like it should, new Motorcraft glow plugs but the Beru's that I took out got red hot with the battery charger. I noticed today that I do have a few injector caps that are damp but I have an electric fuel pump installed. Plugs glowed for about 12 seconds with amp draw and cycled after that with amp draw. Truck tries to catch but today it took about 8 seconds of cranking to get it to fire up, started and died, maybe 5 more seconds of cranking finally started and stayed running. Todays temperature was in the low 50's, truck hadn't been started in about a week. Fast idle solenoid does not work so I usually hold the pedal down just a little during start and for a minute or two after it starts. During the summer or when it is plugged in it starts just fine. What am I missing? Why won't it fire right up?

incorrect timing and or low compression can also be a cause for slower starting.so can a worn ip and injectors,a fuel or air filter.
it's also hard to tell when a starter is worn out sometimes too, because they slow down over time.
it should turn over so fast,it almost sounds like its running minus the exhaust, and diesel clatter.
even with an e-pump,you want to address fuel leaks as soon as you can.don't use them for the purpose of being able to get by with fuel leaks.

I have a new return line kit but I just ordered Viton o-rings today. I hope to have the new return line kit installed next weekend. The truck starts just fine when warm out or after it has been started and running for a bit. How do I trouble shoot whats wrong without shot gunning expensive parts at it. I already blew $80 on glow plugs that I didn't need. It was acting just like bad glow plugs and thought for sure that was the problem because it would start fine when plugged in. I can't afford to change IP, injectors, and a starter. The filters should have plenty of life left in them, they aren't that old and I don't drive it everyday. I'll have to pay closer attention to how fast it turns over. The truck has had new injectors and IP by the previous owner but I'd have to look and see what the approximate mileage was when it was done. It has 184k on it now. I don't recall seeing that the starter was ever changed. Maybe the starter should be the first thing that I try. What brand is best and where should I buy it?

how old is the starter. on mine, i had a hellva time getting it started after it sat for a few hours, thought it was a fuel problem. then my starter tied up, replaced itwith a new one, not a reman, and it fires right up now. i got mine at Napa. i have never had any luck with reman starters and alt's so i always go new. it has a lifetime warrenty to so if i burn it up i gat a new one.

i wouldn't buy one without testing it.
not sure where to go to get these high torque starters tested though.
can you post a vid of the engine turning over?
have you listened to other vids of these engines cranking to compare the sound/speed to yours?

great job tonight pats!

I don't think I can post a vid with this broken down computer I'm using. There was a posted vid of someone on here that put a before and after of their truck on YouTube for changing the glow plugs, the before vid sounded just like my truck. I'll see what I can do maybe I can get one posted with the wife's computer. I see there are several different styles and brands of starters out there, do they all fit and if they do which one is best?

Thanks, TJC. I just ordered one for myself. Hopefully this fixes the problem. I just sold my TDI tonight so the truck is my daily driver now and I need it to start. DB Electrical was the cheapest starter I've seen. Hopefully its a good one. How long have you had yours installed? I should have mine by the weekend. Any tips on the install? Or is it straight forward?

your gonna need a couple extensions and some patience to get the top bolt in and out. The hardest part for me was getting the bolt started...course i was doing it in the middle of winter in the snow and had no feeling in my fingers lol
