2003 Explorer Engine Replacement

Despite a good preventative maintenance program, the engine on my 2003 Ford Explorer went out at about 185,000 miles. (It appears that the cause of the problem was an overheating issue that was not addressed by the driver who was in a hurry to get to work on time.)

I have studied my options and I believe the best option is to replace the engine.

Before I start the project, I would greatly value any wisdom from the knowledgeable readers of this board. Here are some of the questions that I am considering:

Where is the best place to get the replacement engine, should I buy a used engine or a rebuilt engine, short-block or long-block?

What specialty tools are needed, or would expedite, this job?

Which manual provides the best instruction for guiding me through this process?

What matters am I not considering?

Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration.

If your intentions are to keep this vehicle, my advice would be to install a rebuilt long block.

This will provide you with a warranty and minimal installation work.

I cannot recommend a supplier as I do not know where you are located.

Here is an example of prices. https://www.sandjengines.com/ShowAut...PLORER+&Type=8

If you decide to go used check with Midway auto parts in Kansas City. They are a huge late model salvage yard and would probably have several engines you could choose from. And they will usually deal a little on price if its a big item.
